PERLAH’S POV: I stood in the cold hallway, watching as they threw our belongings out. I clutched onto a few of my belongings, as the door slammed shut behind me. The sound echoed through my mind like a death knell. How did it come to this? Rent overdue, notice ignored, and now, eviction. Our home, once a sanctuary, is now a memory. Panic set in as I scanned my surroundings. Where would I go? The streets seemed to stretch out like an endless, unforgiving sea. I thought of all the times I’d promised myself: “Just a little bit more.” But months turned into years and debt piled up. The lawyer’s voice still lingered in my mind: “You have 24 hours to vacate.” Twenty-four hours to erase a life. Where will I sleep tonight? Would I find a new home?
