Chapter 3: The Confession

Daniel gave a tired, almost broken laugh. "You always used to say things like that. I remember. Even when Adam and I were idiots in the garden, you’d just look at us and go, 'Well, I probably shouldn’t let you do that.' And then you’d let us." "That was different. You were boys. I was... safe." "You’re still safe." She shook her head. "No. I’m not. Not for you. Not for me." "Eleanor." "Please, just don’t make this harder than it is." "I’m not trying to." He stood up suddenly, ran a hand through his hair. "You think I planned this? That I came here hoping to feel like this? I didn’t even know this feeling existed." "Daniel, stop." "I can’t. I’ve tried." "You’re Adam’s friend." "I know." "You’re half my age." "Not quite." She gave a hollow laugh. "Okay, close enough," he admitted. "But you keep throwing that at me like its proof this can’t be real. Like feelings come with a damn calendar." She stood too, her voice low. "It’s not just the age. It’s the history. It’s the fact that I held your hand when you scraped your knee. That I made you pancakes in pyjamas. You were a part of my family, Daniel. That matters." "I know it does." "Then why are we even talking about this?" "Because it’s not just history anymore. Something changed. You feel it. Don’t lie and say you don’t." "I’m not lying." She swallowed. "I feel it. God help me, I do." He stepped closer, gently. "Then stop pretending we can keep walking around it like it’ll go away." She looked at him then. Really looked at him. "You still see me the way I used to be. The strong one. The one who held it all together. But I’m not her anymore." He shook his head. "No. I don’t see you the way I used to. That’s the whole point. I see you now. As you are. As someone who’s... hurting, and real, and trying her damned best." "And that’s the person you want?" "Yes," he said. Simple. Steady. She looked away. He stepped closer again, his voice quieter. "Look… I don’t need a label for this. I don’t need a promise. I just… I need you to stop pretending we’re strangers in this house." Her voice was barely above a whisper. "If I let myself want this want you I’ll lose the ground I’m standing on." "Then I’ll stand with you." "You’re too young to mean that." "I’m young, not stupid." She met his eyes again. "You’re just… in love with the idea of me." "No, I’m not." "You are. It’s easy to fall for someone when they’ve always been there. When they feel safe." "This doesn’t feel safe to me." His voice was quiet now, raw. "This feels like standing in the middle of a thunderstorm and not knowing if it’ll kiss me or kill me." She was silent. "You think I don’t understand what I’m doing," he said. "But I do. I know it’s complicated. I know it’s messy. But it’s real. And I’d rather live with real than keep pretending I’m not here, in this, with you." Eleanor sat again, slower this time, like her legs wouldn’t hold her. Her hands shook as she rubbed them together. "Tell me," she said softly. "Tell me what it is you feel. Exactly. No poetry. Just truth." Daniel sat too, leaning forward. "Okay," he said. "Truth?" She nodded. He breathed in. Out. "I think about you in the morning. Before I’m fully awake, I’m already wondering if you slept. I notice the way you stir your tea. The way you laugh at things you don’t really find funny just to make someone else comfortable. I notice when your shoulders sag just a little more after a phone call. I notice everything, Eleanor. And I care. Not because I should. Not because of Adam. But because it’s you." She blinked fast, staring at her hands. "And I’m terrified," he went on. "Terrified that I’ve ruined whatever peace you had. Terrified that I’ve made something beautiful unbearable. But I’m more afraid of walking away and spending the rest of my life wondering if you ever felt even half of what I do." He leaned back, let it hang there. After a long moment, Eleanor spoke. Her voice was brittle, quiet. Honest. "I don’t sleep much anymore." He looked up. She kept her eyes on the fire. "You asked. So I’ll answer. I lie awake, wondering what’s wrong with me. Why it’s so hard to move forward. Why the house feels colder now. Why Adam calls less. Why I’ve stopped painting. And then you came back. And for the first time in a long while, I didn’t feel like I was just… waiting to fade out." Daniel’s eyes softened. "But that scares me too," she said. "Because if you go… and you will go… it’ll be worse than before." "I don’t want to hurt you." "You will. Even if you stay. Because I’ll be the one wondering every day if I made a mistake. If I’ve lost something I can’t afford to lose." "And what if we don’t call it anything?" he asked gently. "What if we don’t try to solve it? What if we just… let it be what it is?" "And what is it, Daniel?" He stood, slowly. Moved to the edge of her chair. Kneeling, like he had before. "It’s me caring about you. Seeing you. Being drawn to you without shame. And maybe that’s not enough for a storybook, but it’s real. And right now, it’s all I’ve got." She touched his face then, fingers brushing the edge of his jaw. Her eyes searched his. "You’ll leave in the morning?" "If that’s what you want." "And we pretend this never happened?" He hesitated. "No. I’ll never pretend. I’ll carry it. Quietly." "And if Adam finds out?" "Then I’ll take the blame." She shook her head. "It’s not just about blame." "I know. It’s about love. The wrong kind. At the wrong time. But still love." Her hand lingered at his face. His eyes closed. They stayed like that, two breaths apart, saying nothing for what felt like an entire season of grief and longing. Then Eleanor whispered, "Come sit with me. Just for a little while." He did. They sat side by side in the dim light, hands barely touching, neither sure what to do next—but both knowing that silence was its own kind of surrender. When they finally stood, it was quiet again. He turned to go. She touched his arm. "Goodnight, Daniel." He nodded. "Goodnight, Eleanor." And that night, they slept restless, alone but knowing something had changed forever.
