I ended up falling asleep with a bag of ice on my ankle, but at least I’d had the foresight to set the alarm. I jerked awake at its klaxon sound, and the bag of completely melted ice slid off my foot and started leaking on the couch. I scrambled to rescue it before it spilled too much. I emptied the water down the drain, tossed the bag in the trash, and headed for the shower. Fifteen minutes later, I was clean and freshly shaved. My ankle felt okay; it only hurt a little. I stepped carefully. But it wasn’t the first time I’d injured it, and a moment’s rummaging in the closet netted me an air cast. Fortunately, the air cells weren’t flat, and after I pulled on socks, I secured the cast around my ankle. Much better. I dressed in a nice pair of jeans and a vintage Queen T-shirt. I would ha
