A mocking smirk crossed my face. So that's how it was. I had seen this woman before; she was Damian's colleague, a female executive. She was incredibly career-driven, much like I used to be.
I looked up at Damian. "When did this start?"
Damian showed no sign of guilt. "That's irrelevant. What matters is that she meets all my requirements for a spouse. She can assist me in my career and contribute to my social resources. Genetically, she can also optimize the offspring."
The absurdity was overwhelming. "Just because she's younger, prettier, and wealthier? Do you have no shame?"
Damian merely pressed his temples. "Don't say things you'll regret. Emotional instability is another penalty point in your performance review."
I laughed in disbelief. "Damian, are you insane?"
He frowned, wanting to say more, but I couldn't be bothered to listen to his ridiculous theories any longer. I slammed the door and returned to my room. Listening to the fireworks outside, I barely slept the whole night, only drifting off in the early hours of the morning.
When I woke up, I found a stranger sitting on the living room sofa. Damian walked out of the bathroom, saw me, and said flatly, "I thought about it last night. A unilateral decision is indeed unfair to you. So, Bianca and I discussed it, and we've decided to take you both home today to see my parents. I will conduct a comparative observation to determine who is better suited for this marital system."
My eyes widened in disbelief.
To my shock, Bianca chimed in, "Ms. Shaw, Damian's decision is for your own good. You've been stagnant for two years and have lost your competitiveness. Why not give it your best shot today? You might still have a chance."
I stared at Bianca. "You're doing this, too? Don't you feel ashamed, brazenly inserting yourself into someone else's marriage?"
She shook her head with a smile. "Your marriage is already falling apart. My appearance at this time is about seizing an opportunity, not interference!"
I had never imagined anyone could spout such twisted logic. Damian spoke up, looking impatient, "Sylvia, don't waste time. I need a clear answer on whether you're coming or not."
I closed my eyes. Thinking of Damian's parents, who hadn't treated me too badly, I decided to treat this as a final farewell and eventually nodded.
On the way back, Bianca snatched the front passenger seat. As she shut the door, she turned to look at me and said, "Ms. Shaw, opportunities must be seized."
I just sat in the back seat, expressionless.
When we arrived at Damian's parents' house, Bianca stuck closely to Damian's side. To any onlooker, they probably looked like the couple making the New Year's visit. I, trailing a few steps behind while carrying the New Year gifts, looked more like a nanny carrying their bags.
Before we even entered, I heard Damian's mother, Maria's warm greeting. "Bianca! You're here! Damian's father, George, has been talking about you all day! Come in, come in! Don't leave the door open, it's cold outside!"
The door slammed shut. I stood in the stairwell, stunned, holding a handful of gift boxes.
The familiarity in her tone meant this couldn't be Bianca's first visit. Yet, I knew absolutely nothing about it. Even though I was the one who took care of Damian's parents every time they got sick, they had never once mentioned Bianca's existence to me. Suddenly, I felt like laughing, laughing at how foolish I had been, letting this family lead me around by the nose. If that was the case, I was done playing the fool.
