Four days before everything changed…
I couldn’t stop thinking about the vision.
The silver palace.
The moonlit throne.
The mysterious voice.
“Find the Lost Key before the fifth night ends.”
The problem was simple.
I had absolutely no idea where to start.
“What exactly does a Lost Key look like?”
The fox trotted beside me through the forest.
Like a key.
I glared at it.
“You’re not helpful.”
I’ve never claimed to be.
The Guardian walked several steps ahead.
Silent.
Watchful.
Ever since the crystal vision, the creature had become unusually serious.
Which worried me.
Because if an ancient magical guardian was concerned, then I probably should be too.
⸻
That evening, I returned to the hidden library.
Luna was already there.
Standing beside the stone pedestal.
Waiting.
The silver light surrounding her seemed stronger than before.
More solid.
More real.
“You came.”
I folded my arms.
“You keep appearing in mysterious places and saying mysterious things.”
A smile touched her lips.
“Fair.”
I approached the pedestal.
“Tell me about the Lost Key.”
The smile vanished.
Immediately.
My stomach tightened.
“You know what it is.”
Luna nodded.
“The Key unlocks the Path of Moonlight.”
The answer only created more questions.
“The what?”
“The path leading to the Crown.”
My pulse quickened.
The Crown.
Everything always came back to the Crown.
Luna ran her fingers across the ancient stone.
“Long ago, when the Moon Crown was hidden, the path to it was sealed.”
The silver symbols on the pedestal glowed faintly.
“Only the Heir can open it.”
The room suddenly felt colder.
“What happens if I don’t find the Key?”
Luna’s eyes met mine.
The answer came quietly.
“The shadows will.”
Silence.
Heavy silence.
Outside, thunder rumbled.
The storm that had been gathering all week continued to grow.
The Awakening was getting closer.
I could feel it.
Everyone could.
⸻
The journal suddenly flipped open.
By itself.
Silver light spilled across its pages.
New words appeared.
My heart skipped.
“The Key rests where moonlight touches memory.”
The message lingered.
Then faded.
I stared.
“What does that even mean?”
The fox jumped onto the pedestal.
It’s a clue.
“No kidding.”
You’re welcome.
I resisted the urge to throw the book at it.
Luna frowned thoughtfully.
“Moonlight touches memory…”
Something flickered across her face.
Recognition.
I noticed immediately.
“You know something.”
She hesitated.
Then nodded.
“There is a place.”
My pulse quickened.
“What place?”
Luna looked toward the forest ceiling.
Toward the moon beyond.
“The Mirror Lake.”
My breath caught.
The silver lake.
The one from my dreams.
The one I’d seen every night for years.
“No.”
Luna nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
The room spun.
The lake was real?
Not a dream?
Not imagination?
An actual place?
The Guardian stepped forward.
We leave now.
The urgency in its voice surprised me.
“Tonight?”
Tonight.
The fox’s ears flattened.
The shadows are moving.
Almost immediately, a distant howl echoed through the forest.
Not from an animal.
Something darker.
Something hunting.
The Guardian’s silver eyes narrowed.
They’re already searching.
Fear settled heavily in my stomach.
If the shadow leader reached the Key first…
I didn’t want to imagine what would happen.
⸻
The journey began under moonlight.
The four of us moved through the forest.
Me.
The Guardian.
The fox.
And Luna.
The deeper we traveled, the stranger the woods became.
Trees twisted into impossible shapes.
Silver flowers bloomed beneath our feet.
Moonlight shimmered between the branches like living mist.
Nothing felt entirely real.
Almost like stepping into a dream.
Then the trees suddenly opened.
And I stopped breathing.
A lake stretched before us.
Perfectly still.
Perfectly silver.
Exactly like the one from my dreams.
Every detail was identical.
The water.
The stars reflected on its surface.
The endless silence.
My legs felt weak.
“This is impossible.”
Luna stepped beside me.
“No.”
Her voice softened.
“It’s memory.”
The silver mark on my wrist began glowing.
The lake answered.
Moonlight spread across the water.
Ripples appeared.
The first ripples I had ever seen.
Then something rose from beneath the surface.
A stone pedestal.
Ancient.
Covered in silver runes.
And resting upon it…
A key.
A beautiful silver key.
My heart hammered.
“The Lost Key.”
The Guardian nodded.
Yes.
For one glorious moment, relief flooded through me.
We found it.
We were first.
Then the shadows arrived.
The lake darkened.
The temperature dropped.
The fox hissed.
Luna turned pale.
And across the water…
The shadow leader stepped from the darkness.
Waiting.
Watching.
Smiling.
“You found it.”
The hunt for the Lost Key had become a race.
And suddenly…
We weren’t alone anymore.
