Chapter 2

603 Words
"Enough! I got married five years ago. The marriage certificate is right here in my bag. Our relationship is perfect; he'd never cheat with some mistress. You've got it all wrong. Touch me again, and I'll call the police!" Emma rolled her eyes angrily, her face twisting with contempt. After rummaging through her bag, she thrust her marriage certificate at the crowd. "David and I have been married three years. He personally took me to register at the clerk's office. Over the past three years, he's traveled abroad constantly. I saw your texts on his phone. He said you were just friends. But when I checked his social media, there were photos of you two together. You can't be 'just friends'. You're the homewrecker stealing my husband!" Her entourage curled their lips in unison. "She's clearly been clinging to Mr. Moore. Now that he's made it big in the past two years, she's come back to kick you out and take the throne herself. What a clever scheme!" "Exactly! In ancient times, adulterers were doomed to be lynched!" My mind reeled in shock. I snatched the garish certificate from her hand, and there he was—David, staring back at me from the photo. Before I could speak, my phone buzzed urgently. Leo: Miss, Mr. Williams does not have much time left. He's calling for you, wants to see you one last time. Without thinking, I blurted out, "Ms. Brown, I've been married longer than you. I recommend checking whether someone has been impersonating him to scam you. My family's in crisis. I'm leaving, but my lawyer will contact you!" I bolted for the exit, but she latched onto my wrist. Emma's eyes turned glacial. "In such a rush to flee? Afraid we'll expose your mistress act?" Being stopped again, rage flared up inside me. 'Is she deaf or just stupid? I said it's a life-or-death emergency!' Just then, someone behind me spoke up timidly. "I'm a staff member. I can check the serial numbers on your certificates to verify their authenticity." Even though I was in a hurry, refusing to let them check would make me look like I was fleeing in guilt. I confirmed one last time with her. "After you check, you'll let me go immediately!" I anxiously asked Leo about my grandfather's condition, terrified I might be too late. He sent back a video. My grandfather's eyes were wide open, and he kept calling my name, clinging to life by a thread. My eyes welled up with tears as I desperately turned to the clerk, voice trembling. "Is it done yet? I'm in a hurry." Despite the urgency, I still cautioned Emma. "There's something off about this. Reach out to my assistant later to see if this is some kind of scam." Whoever was playing games with my husband's identity wouldn't get away with it. David is the CEO of Nova Group, a precious legacy my grandfather left me. This could very well be a trap set by a rival to ruin the company's reputation. The staff examined the serial number closely, then shot me a disdainful glare. She returned Emma's marriage certificate with politeness. "Yours has a valid serial number—it's genuine!" Then, sneering, she flung mine to the floor. "You were so sure of yourself, I almost thought yours was real too. But your serial number can't be found in the system! Were you trying to pull a scam? Mr. Moore's reputation has exploded these past few years. It's true what they say—once a man gets rich, all kinds of filth latch onto him."
