Chapter 9

***Dylanne “I think you should hook up with some guys tonight, Dyl. Besides, you haven't had real fun in years,” Kim chattered beside me. She had spotted some “really hot” men who she thought would be down for a quick f**k. That's the thing with Kim. She says it as it is. Never sugarcoats. Never pretends. Yet here I am, lying to her about me and her brother. It's not like we did something together, but the date still counts, doesn't it? My eyes scanned the “boys” she had pointed at. I rolled my eyes and looked away because they just weren't my type. My eyes, however, landed right on the very person I was avoiding. Kai. But this time, he had his hands on a woman's back, helping her rub whatever it was. I swear I should look away and focus on Kim, the boys, and the pool. But I couldn't. My eyes stayed on them for a while, and when his hands reached lower to her waist, I stood up in a hurry. Who the f**k was she, and why was his hand on her? She looked back at him, guiding him as he rubbed more cream on her, and I could tell from here that she liked him. She probably thought he was cute, but hell no. Jealousy clouded my vision soon enough, and slowly, anger did too. Why was he touching another woman when he had told me he wanted me? I tried to shake it off, looked away, and even hummed some jazz, but I just couldn't distract myself. I stood up and whispered to Kim to give me a minute. I knew she hadn't spotted him yet, so I used that to my advantage and marched straight to the other side of the pool. Kai was surprised to see me as he shifted from the woman. I could tell from her reaction that she was a little confused. Good, because I had an idea. “Hey, baby.” I moved right in between his arm and the chair, pulling him to my waist, hands around his. Kai stood there, wide-eyed in shock as he stared at me, confused as hell. “I've been waiting for you. What's the hold-up? Kim was looking for you.” I stood on my tiptoes and placed a kiss on the side of his mouth. My body played tricks on me from the contact. It had been so long since we were this close, and good God, I could almost rip him apart. “Excuse me.” The brunette stood up. She smiled right at me, but you could tell if someone liked you or was just pretending from the eyes. And this one was definitely pretending. “Do you know her?” She pointed at me, but I stood head-on, staring right back at her with that devilish glint and half-assed smile. “Yes,” I said before Kai could interrupt. “I'm his girlfriend. And you are?” “Oh, I didn't know you had a girlfriend.” She looked at Kai. One second passed, and I thought he was going to lie. He didn't say anything, didn't deny it either. My hands shook nervously; my lips were already chapped. Please don't deny this. This would be embarrassing. I swallowed. One second passed, then another. “Well, now you do.” He pulled me closer and placed a kiss on the top of my head. I melted into his kiss, silently begging for another. This may be an act, but I definitely loved the way he held me, like I was his girl. And that… I kinda liked that. “Have you been waiting long, princess?” My heart skipped a beat. “Y-yeah, I have.” The brunette just stood there, watching our little show. “I missed you,” I whispered. For real this time. I didn't care if he thought this was all acting, but that was how I felt. I did miss him. I'd always missed him, and somehow, something in me had always waited. I don't think I'd moved on from Kai Reed. “O-kay. I think I'll take my leave now. I'm sorry. I thought you were single.” She held out her hand as he dropped the container right into it. We both let her walk away as Kai picked me up. I wrapped my big legs around him as we walked into the restroom. The moment the door shut, he dropped me. And then there was nothing but silence. Neither he nor I said a word; we both stood apart. “I—” “You—” “Sorry.” “You go first,” he offered. But what could I say? What lie could I possibly cook up? That I was jealous? That Kim wasn't actually looking for him? I shook my head. “No, you go first. I insist.” “I wasn't actually hitting on her. I didn't even ask her name.” This time, I looked into his eyes. They held nothing but truth. He wasn't lying. So he didn't even like her one bit? “Why are you telling me this? It's not like it's my business.” “Because it was important. I would never hit on another woman if she's not you.” Slowly, I could feel the burn in my cheeks and stomach. My breath rasped as I tried to take in what he had just said. Did he mean that? Did he actually… like me like that? He took a step closer, and I let him. I didn't move away. I stood there, watching him come so close our toes touched. “What about you?” he whispered. It looked like he was trying to keep his hands to himself while his eyes searched mine for permission. My heart thrummed in my chest. It wasn't out of fear, hurt, or pain. I nodded, letting him come close and touch me. My body shivered slightly as he trailed fingers along my arms and finally cupped my cheeks. Electricity buzzed through my veins while he touched me, and then came his lips… on mine. Goosebumps flooded my body like a second skin. “I lied,” I whispered. “Kim wasn't actually looking for you.” “I know.” His hands held my chin, soft and soothing. This time he was too close—so much so that my breaths became heavy, my large chest heaving with every one I took. I told myself I could avoid him. That I could possibly not think about him being here and live through this vacation. But that was a lie…not while he was here. Not when he occupied my every thought. And then I said the very thing I'd been trying to avoid. “T-touch me,” I whispered into his ear.
