***Kai
I had planned everything to be perfect. We would have a date in my private suite and then focus on business. Maybe I was being selfish, yes. Maybe it was me lying to myself that this was just a meeting and it meant nothing more to me.
However, I did not expect Kim. I didn't even foresee it, and the shitty thing to top it off? I had totally forgotten she has a spare key to this room.
Dylanne rushed into the bathroom the moment Kim opened the door.
“There you are! Jeez, I've been calling you for ages.” She walked right in, her eyes catching the already set table, narrowing on it.
“Uh… were you expecting someone?” She threw her Chanel bag onto the bed as she sat down in Dylanne's chair.
“This is warm.” She looked behind me, eyes moving around the room. I know my little sister; she's two things: annoying and nosy. The annoying part, I can handle. The nosy part… not so much.
“Someone else was here with you, right?”
I cleared my throat, stuck a hand into my pocket, and sat in my chair. “There's no one here with me.”
“That's a lie,” she said quickly. “If you were alone, why would you have two seats?”
“Can’t a man just want to have a solo dinner with an empty chair for comfort?”
Her face squeezed with disgust and empathy at the same time. “That's so weird and lonely. Oh my god, are you sure you're okay, Kai? Do you need a therapist?”
I rolled my eyes, holding my cutlery in place.
“I'm fine. You're being dramatic. What do you want?”
“You're chasing me away… hmmm. For some reason, I do not trust you. I think you have someone in your room. Maybe a girl you don't want me to know about.”
The next minute, she stood up, eyes searching through the room. Her hands touched my curtain drapes, and as if that wasn't enough, she started moving to the bathroom. Alarm flared in my chest instantly.
Instinctively, I rushed in front of her, stopping her midway.
“Okay, first: you beg me to come back to the States, and now you're searching my room, looking for some mysterious woman?”
“I'm worried about you. You came back and you aren't even dating anyone yet.”
“I don't want to date… simple.”
“That's a lie. You used to be a woman magnet. What changed?” she asked, hands crossed over her chest.
“Life.” Everything.
“Anyways… this isn't why I came.” She pulled away and walked back into the room. My breaths calmed as I followed her.
“Why are you here?”
She picked up her bag and fumbled with whatever until she got it out. In her hands were three plane tickets to Lake Como. I scrunched my nose as I stared at the plane tickets.
“Tickets to Italy? For what?”
“We are going on a vacation. A planned one, by yours truly.”
“Why? And was this paid with my card?”
She quickly pulled them back, laughing it off. “Well, yeah… but that's just part of life, Kai. You need to deal with it.”
I sat down, leaned into my chair, and listened attentively. “These tickets are for you, me, and Dylanne.”
The mention of Dylanne caught my attention. I straightened, hands out of my pockets and on the table.
“Dylanne is coming?”
“Of course she is. Who would go shopping with me?” she asked, her expression as if she was genuinely worried I had an assimilation problem.
I don't care how much she spends if Dylanne was going to be in the picture. This just means we have to spend more time together. Well, real time. This way, she doesn't have an excuse to not be around me.
The work thing was silly. I didn't actually think she was going to agree with it, especially since she has no clue I knew she was working in Rhys’s company and begged him to let her work with me. It was a slow shoot, but worth it.
Hey, in my defense, I needed to make up for making her walk back that night. I know it hurt her feelings, but I was too mad to judge.
But this right here? This is a golden opportunity.
“You know what, Kim? Book a nice resort or something… I will definitely come for a vacation.”
Her eyes lit up instantly. “Really?! You are absolutely going to love it!” She shrieked, her voice tiny like a mouse.
I loved to see her happy, but this was going to be my plan. A plan to make Dylanne fall back in love with me. I'm going to let her see the man that I am, and she would choose me instead.
Kim stood up and ran into my arms, saying something else that I had no idea about. She kept on rambling, talking about the space and the view as she picked up her bag.
“You know what? I should call Dyl. She was talking about going on a break, and Rhys would give it to her anyway—she's been working so hard.”
“I think you should.”
“Thank you sooooo much, Kai! You are amazing! I'll text her… she's probably still in her meeting.”
She dashed out without a second thought, skipping happily as she closed the door behind her. When I was certain she had left the floor, I opened the bathroom door.
Dylanne was asleep, crouched on the side of the bathtub. She looked so peaceful with half her hair falling over her face.
I tiptoed into the bathroom, picked her up, and walked back to the bed. My chest warmed and for the first time in years, I could feel that sizzling feeling in my chest again. The way I had always felt when she was close to me, holding me. Placing her gently on the bed, she relaxed into my chest. Her scent, her warmth – it felt like five years ago all over again. The year I f****d it up.
I covered her with the sheets, gently placing a kiss on her head and then her eyelids. She made a cute sound but only coiled up like a worm as she slept comfortably.
She must've been so exhausted to have passed out in the bathroom like that. What if she ends up refusing to go on the vacation?
That doesn't matter, because this year is different. This year, I would win your heart back, Dylanne Hayes. I would prove to you that we deserve each other.
