Chapter 6   Aubrey’s POV:   It’s a hot and sunny Sunday. The warm breeze slowly brushed my shoulders as the sunlight penetrated my skin. I hurriedly made my way to my usual coffee shop. I am just one block away and kind of starting to regret walking in this heat. My condo is just 3 blocks away and riding a cab is just a waste. I can’t seem to find my umbrella earlier so I just left without one.   I started to jog and pushed back my glasses that is slowly slipping out because I am sweating. After a while I reached Bo’s coffee.   I entered the premises and went in line with the other customers. It seemed to be flocking today with people. Well, it is a Sunday and people usually go out on days like this with their family. I kind of miss mom and dad. Me and dad used to go fishing on Sundays abroad and it was really fun.   It was finally my turn and I greeted the Sasha. It’s her shift today; we became friends now because I always come here. I know most of the staffs and I am glad I met them too. I don’t really have friends in school well, except James.   “Good morning, Sasha,” I greeted her smilingly. “Good morning Ms. Aubrey.” She smiled back at me. “The usual?” she asked and I nodded. I always order here and I think they already memorized my favorite drink. I paid thru card and went to sit in the corner side of the shop. I pulled my book out and started reading while waiting for my order.   “Oh, how I hate this type of character.” I said to myself. I am reading about the second character who acted like a friend to the main character and it’s irritating me how plastic people can be just to get what they want.   “Really? Why though? I loved that book.”     Someone said. I was shocked when a girl half my age sat on the chair in front of me. She stared at me with a playful smile plastered on her face. She looks familiar!   “You are Cassandra, right?” I asked unsure. She nodded happily. I looked around to see who she is with. I did not even notice someone walked towards me, until she spoke. Maybe I was too hung up on the story that I failed to notice my surroundings.   “So, whose character do you hate?” she asked again and wiggled her feet that couldn’t reach the ground from the chair she is sitting.   “You’ve read this?” I asked her back.   “Uhuh,” she answered smiling.  “I’ve read all the old books on different genres including today’s novels.” She said as she was playing with her fingers.   All old books? What does she mean by that?   “Oh, okay. Well, I hate Arthur. He was pretending to be a good person,” I said. “Well, novels are like that. What good would it be if it doesn’t have any thrills?” she said. It feels like I am taking to an old person in a child’s body.   “Well, you are right about that. Who are you with?” I asked.   “Just me,” she said plainly.   “I saw you a few blocks from here and I thought I’d go and say hi,” she said. My brows furrowed. A few blocks from here? Her eye sight must be that good. I can’t even see without my glasses.   “I like you,” she added. “Uhm, thank you?” I said unsure. I doubt she is here alone. How could her parents leave a minor on her own?   “I met you before.” She said again.   “Yeah, at the skating rink,” I answered. “No, before that.” She was still playing with her fingers. Where are her parents?   “Hey, Cassandra, where are your parents?” I asked her.   “In the palace,” she gave me a straightforward answer. “Palace?” I asked again. “Yeah,” she answered seriously. Maybe she meant at home.   “You know, my brother looked everywhere for you,” she said. I was taken a back. What is she going on about?   “Wha—what?” I asked confused.   “You should be careful at night. It’s not safe. I need to go, my brother is looking for me.” After she said that, she stood up. “Wait, Cassandra!” I called her but she just kept walking. I stood up to follow her and was stopped by Sasha as she gave me my drink. I hurriedly put it on my table and ran outside, only to see there was no trace of Cassandra. How can she disappear that quickly? The corner roads here are long and I only missed her for a few seconds. Was it just my imagination?   And how could she tell her brother is looking for her? She didn’t even bring a cellphone. I just scratched my head. That was weird.   “You should be careful at night. It’s not safe.”  It kept going on my mind about what she said. Why would she say something like that? We don’t even know each other.   I went back inside and sat on the chair, confused. I took a sip of my coffee and continued to read the book. I jolted when my phone rang. Now I am being nervous.   I checked to see who called. It was dad. I answered the phone and turned on the video and put on my headset.   “Hi dad!” I greeted. “Hi sweetheart!” dad greeted back. He was smiling ear to ear. “How come you are still awake?” I asked. Its night time abroad so I was wondering.   “Well, I just want to check on my daughter really quick. How are you?” he asked. “I am fine, how about you and mom?” I asked. “We are good. We will be going home for Christmas!” he said excitedly. “Really?” I said giggling. Its 3 months from now and I can’t wait! “Yeah, we managed to pull some strings at work. Your mom is not here yet though. She’s been busy a lot. She wanted to send her regards.” Dad explained.   Maybe that’s why mom called me but I missed it.   “Well, tell her to call me as soon as she’s able to.”   My dad was wearing his favorite long sleeves, the one with the sun painting I did when I was a kid. It’s surprising how it still fits him!   “Well, I got to go. I just wanted to tell you that me and mom loves you, kiddo,” he told me and made a flying kiss gesture on the camera.   “I love you too both, dad,” I answered. I smiled at him and he ended the call.   I miss them both. I am glad that despite how busy they are and our time difference, they still try to contact me.   I sipped on my coffee and stared on the window. This was a quiet afternoon, not much cars going around the neighborhood. Still, this day was weird and happy at the same time.
