This is a work of fiction, but the violence, vitriol and legislation harming transgender people is all too real. In the past year, dozens of anti-transgender bills have been introduced all across the United States alone.
Many of these bills are trying to prevent trans youth from having access to life-affirming treatment (e.g. puberty blockers) and preventing them from competing in sports. The ultimate goal is to increase trans teen suicides and increase public animosity and violence against trans people in general.
It should be noted that transgender women of color are the most common targets of anti-trans violence.
