12 TESSA I knew why he slept with his leg on after catching him trying to sneak out without me. “Where are you going?” I asked upon hearing the scuff of carpet as he opened the door of our hotel room. “Nowhere, go back to sleep,” he said. “I’ll return soon. Rest.” Oh no he didn’t. If I’d heard the saying once, I’d heard it a thousand times from Bobby. “Nowhere” meant “Somewhere important. Somewhere for me to know, and you to never find out.” Two could play at this game. I yanked the covers over my head and pretended to sleep. As soon as the heavy thunk of his footsteps faded away down the hall, I leapt up, shoved my feet, sockless in some shoes, and tossed on shorts and a tank top.
