19 –––––––– A VACUUM WHIRRED IN one of the nearby offices as Nick rubbed the sleep out of his eyes, the nighttime cleaning crew the only other sign of life. The night shifters were out in the parking lot, getting a buzz on while the radios squawked from their cars. Nick tried to make friends by saying he’d man the phones while they went, but was already arousing suspicion with his unpaid late night diligence. He wouldn’t be surprised if there were rumors flying by morning that he was an Internal Affairs spook, keeping an eye on the departmental goings-on after hours. Images of manila file folders were blending together and he was having trouble concentrating. In a period of ten years there were over one hundred different cases of unsolved transient murders.
