29 –––––––– NICK PUNCHED THE PANELING on the inside of the elevator as he traveled back toward ground level. He’d spent almost a month poring over cases where evidence was thrown out because it had been collected under inappropriate methods and now he was going in and doing exactly that. Watson was lying, but Nick had no solid evidence, and now Watson would be taking precautions to make sure he didn’t dig any further. Nick felt like he was deer hunting with a bell around his neck. He needed to talk to Penny. The direct approach had failed. Maybe she could get more information on the transactions from her end. Even if Marjorie Wells changed all the computer records, there had to be another paper trail. When he got out onto the street he turned on his phone to call her. The display read:
