Thirty-six hours till the anniversary.
That's all I have.
That's all Sara has.
Our helicopter hovers above the thick, dense trees masking the island below—the Night Shifters’ base.
Jake and I sit at the back of the helicopter, the pilot up front, with headsets plugged in our ears as we wait for communication from the base.
“Unidentified aircraft,” a voice finally crackles through the radio. “You are hovering over restricted airspace. Reveal yourselves or you will be fired upon.”
The pilot leans closer to the console.
“Night Shifters base, this is transport H–17 requesting clearance to land.”
A pause.
“Code?” the voice demands.
“Seven-Echo-Four-Nine-Delta-Two-Kilo." Pilot says, "Repeat. Seven-Echo-Four-Nine-Delta-Two-Kilo.”
