~SARA~ “What is going on here?” Khlan repeats, his voice dripping with something dangerous. I swallow and take a step back, a cold dread creeping through the air. I feel the guard’s hand stiffen in mine. Khlan sees our hands locked together; the guard sees that he does and pulls his hand from mine immediately. Khlan’s frown deepens. “Mind telling me what is going on here, Ben?” he asks. Colour drains from Ben’s face as he makes to speak. He tugs at the neck of his sleeve as if the air had suddenly become hot and then mutters, “Well—I—it’s—erm—” “I fell to the ground,” I say instantly, taking a step forward, “and he heard when I did. He offered to take me to the kitchen to put some ice on it to avoid it getting swollen.” Khlan’s brows narrow. “But you seem to be walking just fine.”
