I began work on Radioland in 2016, which seems like twenty years ago, and not six. It’s safe to say that, though we’ve seen many significant precedents prior, often from a distance, the pandemic of 2020 revealed and exacerbated so much about the things in our world that are overdue for change, specifically with the widespread re-acknowledgement of anti-Black racism and its many structural manifestations in society. What I have attempted in Radioland I have undertaken with great humility and deep respect for those lived experiences that I cannot personally know, but which I have tried my best to humbly understand while remaining cognizant of the freedom and privilege that comes with doing so as a white author.
