CHAPTER 29 By the end of the week, the population of Olney had got used to the sight of the military personnel, the medics and the giant marquee and it’s smaller cousins that had grown up to form the hospital complex and accommodation for those working within it. Those who ventured out onto the almost deserted streets of the village had established an almost other-worldly relationship with those from the outside, nodding politely to the doctors and nurses without really acknowledging them. The newcomers were certainly not treated as friends, even though their purpose in being in the village was to help and if possible, protect the residents from the disease that had ravaged their community. They were treated almost like aliens, there to carry out a task whilst remaining suitably detached
