Chapter 7
I took the breakfast and sat beside him on the sofa, maintaining a rather visible distance.
Unhurriedly, I took the remote control and changed the channel. A sitcom was playing, so be it.
I laughed while eating. And here comes my revenge!
“I am working.”
“Good.”
“Lower the voice.”
“No!”
“Don’t let me repeat it.”
“I said no.”
He suddenly snatched it from my hand and shut off the TV. You!
I wrestled with him trying to get the remote control back. Unknowingly, I sat in his lap in a rather compromising position.
Suddenly, he pinned both of my hands above my head. I wriggled.
“Don’t move.” His hoarse voice sounded. Startled, I looked at him. His eyes were hooded with restrained desire. Now, I could feel something hard poking at my bottom. Damn it!
At that instant, the doorbell rang, breaking the tense atmosphere.
“I… I… I will open the door.” I whispered, all flushed.
Without waiting for his response, I ran to open the door, not before neatly composing my clothes.
“What took you so long…and wait, what’s with the nameplate?”
Ahh…name plate? Sh*t! I have yet to inform Jessica about my marriage. She’s definitely going to kill me!
“Why don’t you first come in?” I threw my most bright smile towards her.
As soon as we settled down, she started bombarding me with all kinds of questions.
“I am married” I uttered. She gasped at me, too shocked to even blink.
I hurriedly fetched her a glass of water. "Are you okay?"
After a while.
“What the hell are you spitting, woman?” She roared.
“It’s true… I got married two days back.”
She still couldn’t believe it. Though I can’t blame her, I even felt it was astonishingly unbelievable.
The next second, Charles walked in all decked up. I swiftly got up to introduce them.
“Jessica, this is Charles, my husband.”
I looked over at him, “Jessica is my best friend.”
“Hi.” In return, he just nodded at her. “I will be heading out. Be ready by 1:00.”
I hummed and then he left.
“He is so hot.” I glared at her.
Well, he is hot! “Oh, is he the Charles hawking.” She suddenly screamed, startling the hell out of me.
“He is, but why are you exaggerating?”
“Jenny, he is super rich, but anyway, tell me everything now.”
I narrated to her the whole story. Ultimately, she gaped at me.
“Girl, you married a goldfish”, she took me into hug.
“Are you happy?” She gave me a scrutinizing look.
“Does it even matter?” i shrugged.
“But you are glowing babe.” Hmm…?!
“What do you mean?” I questioned.
“Yeah, it's the first time I have seen you so carefree after that incident.”
Is it?!
“Why don’t we buy some gifts?” I asked, since he was driving towards my in-law’s house. He looked up at me. I hesitated but eventually spoke up. “You know it's my first time visiting home.”
After a few minutes, he stopped the car at a high-end gift store.
As I gawked at the presents, I was petrified. They were too expensive to my liking. “Have you decided yet?”
“Ahh…why don’t we just get a bouquet of flowers instead?”
Ignoring my words, he took me inside. The store manager followed us.
Charles pointed out a few things. “Pack them.”
I gaped at him, dumbfounded.
So, what if he is rich? That is crazy.
As the workers were packing things, I explored the store.
All of a sudden, my foot slipped. Just as I was expecting to touch the ground, strong arms held me. The familiar scent hit me and my eyes collided with those gray ones. I cleared my throat when he let me go. I could still feel the heat of his hand on my waist.
“Thank you.” I sincerely thanked him. If not for him, I would surely have embarrassed myself.
“Sir, it’s done.” The store manager announced.
*****
HAWKING MANSION.
No sooner did we pass through the gate, several bulgy dogs rushed towards our car and mercilessly barked. I became pale. Ahh…?
“So many?” baffled I asked.
“Security purpose.”
I sat still while he parked the car.
“Aren’t you getting out?” he questioned. I could notice the glint in his eyes.
“I will follow you.”
As soon as he got out, all the dogs rushed towards him. He patted their heads.
“Get out.” he gazed in my direction. I shook my head in negation. No way was I facing those beasts. “First tell them to go away.”
“Come out, they won’t bite.”
“No!”
Sighing, he hushed all of them away. I instantly got out and ran towards him. The dog glared at me and started barking. I was so frightened that I hid in his arms. They are so terrifying!
He patted my back as if comforting me, but I could hear the suppressed laughter of his. Enraged, I pinched his waist.
Bad idea…he has got a hard body!
At that instant, a lady came out running.
“Tom get the dogs inside.”
“Yes miss.”
“Hey there you two.” She gave Charles a look and took me into a hug.
“Welcome home, sister-in-law,” she beamed. I was taken aback.
“You can call me Sara, his elder sister.”
“Nice to meet you.” I generously smiled at her. She seemed easy-going. “Come, I will take you inside.”
“Gifts?” I glanced at Charles.
“Oh, he will bring it.” She ushered me eagerly. So, we headed inside, leaving the distressed Charles at the back.
I looked around, the design of the house was contemporary, and it was really well maintained. I was really impressed by the style.
As we entered, a toddler came running towards us.
“Mommy!” she jumped onto Sara.
She gawked at me curiously. Sara smiled and introduced me to her cute little daughter.
“She’s your aunt Jenny.”
“You are my uncle’s wife?”
I nodded and bent to her level. “And who is this beautiful princess?”
“I am Emma.” She answered shyly, taking sneaky glances. Aww…she’s so cute.
I couldn’t help but kiss her forehead. She blushed. I am already in love with this girl!
“Hello sister-in-law,” a voice called out. I looked up.
“Hey, you must be Thia.” I grinned at her. She was present on the ‘husband meeting’ day, but I was too caught up to talk to her. She merrily nodded. “Finally, you are here.” They were all really welcoming. It is impossible not to admire them.
“Come.” Emma held my hand and the two sisters followed behind.
“Dad, mom.” I called out.
Rita, my mother-in-law, walked towards engulfing me in a hug while my father-in-law nodded at me.
“What took you so long?” Mom asked me.
Before I could answer, Charles' distant voice sounded. “We were caught up with the gifts.”
Emma quickly rushed towards Charles. He lifted her while she pecked his cheeks.
He was so gentle. For the first time, I gazed at him sweetly. How adorable!
We all settled in the living room while Rita went into the kitchen along with Thia. I felt so content. I looked towards Charles; he was engrossed in playing the new game that he had brought with Emma. I could keep watching them on and on!
“So, how’s it between you and Charles?” Sarah muttered.
“It’s been superb.” I smiled at her.
“I am relieved to know that. I mean, you know he can be self-conceited sometimes.”
“Yeah, I have seen that even before our marriage, but it’s alright. I can handle it.” I gave her an assuring look. Somehow, I have gotten used to his attitude and mood swings.
