AN ANNOYING HUSBAND Athena’s POV “My little Raven, how’re you doing today?” Dion asks. She pouts, turning a full one-eighty degrees away from him on her chair positioned beside his hospital bed. The open cut on her lips stinging due to the action, “I’m fine, grandpa.” The vitals monitor beeping causes Athena to internally release a sigh of relief. “Your bodyguards tell me you got involved in a fight?” He smiles at her back. She briefly looks back at him, “Yes, grandpa.” She answers. “Well they started it first,” She huffs. “No matter the issue Athena, you can’t go around punching boys,” He softly reprimands her. He said her first name; she knows he’s serious, so she didn’t say a word. “Sometimes, it’s hard to fathom that you’re a girl,” He heaves a sigh. “So, what did they do or say this time?” He inquires with a soft smile splayed on his lips. This time she turns to look at him, “They picked on Mio because she still can’t pronounce English words properly. I politely told them to knock it off, but instead they threatened to hit us. So, I hit them instead,” Athena hits her right fists against her left palm “They actually deserve it…” Dion bursts out laughing and in the process coughs a little harder than normal. Athena hurries to his side, “I’m fine Little Raven, sit back down,” He assures her in between fits of coughs. When she sits back down, and he stabilizes, Dion stares at Athena. “Grandpa, you need to be careful not to trigger your blood pressure again,” she worries. When Athena catches the solemn look on Dion’s face, she asks, “Grandpa, what’s the matter?” “Little Raven, I can’t believe you’ll be sixteen soon…” He begins. “You look just like your mother,” Dion states the obvious. Athena smiles, “I know, grandpa. You say it at least five times every day since you took me in.” He snickers, “Do you remember when your parents and I took you to see little Ares on his birthday?” Dion asks suddenly. Athena’s face twists in disgust, “How could I forget? I was seven, and he was extremely rude. He literally made me cry grandpa,” Athena scoffs as she folds her hands in annoyance. “I remember apologizing for that,” he laughs softly. “Do you know our family history, little Raven?” “You and Grandpa Ben have been childhood friends. When you both grew older, you built a conglomerate in your names, which led to a lifetime of friendship and whatnot,” She explains nonchalantly. He looks at her with disbelief, sighing due to frustration, “You have Liam’s fire inside of you; I hear they call you spitfire at school,” Dion teases her as he refers to his son, Athena’s father. Athena scoffs in unbelief. “Those bullies are to blame for sullying my charming personality,” She scoffs, her tone lace with anger. Dion ignores her comment “Seraphina was always the one who could handle his energy and outburst, and when you came along, his entire demeanour changed.” “I can barely remember them, grandpa. It feels as if with every passing day my memory of them fades away,” Athena confesses with a sigh escaping her lips. “You know, that birthday party was a way for both you and Ares to get to know each other, even if as kids,” Dion exposes. Athena frowns, “Why? Why would you do that?” “Because you two…” Dion hesitates. “After Ben and I grew our conglomerate to a certain height, we decided to get married. We were both fortunate to meet our wives within the same period. I tied the knot in spring, while he in autumn of that same year,” Dion narrates. “And…how…how does this relate to Ares?” Athena questions with a wide arch of her brow. “I’m getting there, little Raven, be patient,” He tells to her. “Mae bore to us Liam, while Elina bore to Ben, Ivana-Rose. Since our children were good friends, we agreed that they should get married when they got older. But we didn’t know that they already had partners of their own. They totally disagreed to our wishes,” He explains with a soft laugh. “Where are you going with this grandpa?” Athena suspiciously inquires. “Well, in exchange for their freedom, we made them promise us one thing,” Dion smiles widely. “Which is?” “That their children would get married instead,” He says carefully. “What? Ares?” Athena’s eyes widens in horror. “They…you…can’t do this to me!” Her voice raises an octave. “Well technically, you’ll have to be grown for that to happen. It’s a heads-up,” Dion throws her a wink. “But I don’t want to marry anyone when I’m older. I want to be with you, and Mio,” She whines. “How’s Mio by the way? She doing good? It’s been a while I saw her,” “With me by her side, you bet,” She answers with bravado. Athena realises how he changes the topic, “Grandpa…” She grits her teeth. He brushes her off, “Oh don’t worry Little Raven, Ares will definitely love you. All you need is patience…” _____ sighs____ “In the end grandpa, I wasn’t able to stay with either you or Mio,” Athena mutters to herself, wiping a tear that runs and slides down her mole on her left cheek, due to her memory jump. The view of New York is always amazing from her office building on the eighty-seventh floor, but Athena will always prefer the quiet and solace of the countryside. “Grandpa, I really miss you. I would have loved to rant to you right now. Ares is completely nuts and treats me like crap,” She says, her gaze to the heavens. “And you still want me to be patient?” She scoffs. The buzzer on her door rings and she walks back to her oak desk, sitting on her ergonomic chair. “Come in,” She says. “Miss Athena…” Miss Lucy Hildegarde, her personal assistant strides in with a pile of work documents hoist up in her right arm. “Yes?” Athena answers nervously. “Due to the lengthy one month break, there are a massive number of files that you need to…” Her phone rings and she instantly picks up, “Hello? Ares!”
