CHAPTER FOUR
FATED ENCOUNTERS
Maya moved deeper into the forest, her flashlight cutting a narrow path through the darkness.
The Alpha's howl still echoed somewhere behind her.
She could feel it in her bones.
She didn't turn around.
She had made her decision.
The moonstone was somewhere inside these woods, hidden and guarded by the wolves. If destroying it was truly the only way to break the bond between herself and the Alpha, then Maya would find it.
She had no intention of allowing an ancient pact to dictate the rest of her life.
But the deeper she went, the more unsettled she became.
The forest seemed different at night.
Trees twisted overhead, their branches creating strange patterns against the moonlight. Shadows moved whenever the wind stirred the leaves.
Maya tightened her grip on the flashlight.
"Just find the stone," she whispered. "Then go home."
A branch snapped.
Maya stopped.
Her heart jumped.
She slowly turned toward the sound.
Nothing.
She waited.
The silence returned.
Maya continued.
She had barely taken ten steps when another sound came from behind her.
This time, she knew it wasn't the wind.
She spun around.
The Alpha stood between the trees.
Maya's breath caught.
He was watching her.
His golden eyes seemed brighter beneath the moonlight, and the expression on his face was far more serious than it had been earlier.
"You followed me," Maya said.
The Alpha stepped out of the shadows.
"You shouldn't be here."
Maya tightened her grip around the flashlight.
"You've already told me that."
"And yet you're still here."
"Because I'm not leaving."
Something flickered in his eyes.
Amusement.
Perhaps admiration.
Maya couldn't tell.
"You don't understand what you're dealing with."
"Then explain it to me."
The Alpha studied her.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Maya hated the way his gaze affected her.
She had met him only recently, yet standing near him created a strange sensation inside her. Fear and curiosity battled against something else—something she didn't want to acknowledge.
An inexplicable pull.
The Alpha stepped closer.
Maya instinctively stepped back.
"Don't."
He stopped.
His eyes remained fixed on hers.
"What are you afraid of?"
"You."
The answer came quickly.
The corner of his mouth lifted.
"At least you're honest."
Maya glared at him.
"You're not funny."
"I wasn't trying to be."
His expression became serious again.
"You need to understand something, Maya. This territory isn't simply land."
"Then what is it?"
"It is sacred."
He looked toward the surrounding trees.
"My pack has lived here for generations. The forest is woven into our existence."
Maya shook her head.
"You can't just claim the land because your family has lived here for a long time."
The Alpha's gaze returned to hers.
"You misunderstand."
His voice softened.
"This territory has belonged to my pack for generations. You have been drawn here for a reason."
Maya frowned.
"What reason?"
"I'm visiting my grandmother."
"You're more than a visitor."
His words made her uneasy.
"My bloodline has ties to this land."
Maya stared at him.
"What are you talking about?"
"Your family has been connected to the pack longer than you know."
Maya's stomach tightened.
Her grandmother had already told her about the ancient pact.
But hearing the Alpha confirm it made everything feel more real.
"You’re lying."
"I have no reason to lie."
"I don't belong to anything."
The Alpha stepped closer.
Maya fought the urge to retreat.
"You think your life in the human world is all there is?"
His voice lowered.
"You have a destiny intertwined with the pack, with the moon..."
He paused.
His eyes locked onto hers.
"...and with me."
A shiver ran down Maya's spine.
She hated the way he emphasized those last two words.
More frighteningly, something inside her responded to them.
A strange warmth stirred beneath her skin.
Recognition.
She didn't understand it.
She didn't want to understand it.
"Why me?"
Her voice trembled despite her efforts to remain strong.
The Alpha studied her face.
"Because the moon chose you."
Maya frowned.
"What does that mean?"
He didn't answer immediately.
Instead, his gaze moved over her face as though searching for something.
Then he looked at her hand.
Maya followed his gaze.
There was nothing there.
"What?"
The Alpha's expression changed.
"You don't know."
"Know what?"
He stepped forward.
Maya immediately stepped backward.
He stopped again.
"The mark."
Maya's heart began pounding.
"What mark?"
"The one that binds you to the pack."
Maya stared at him.
"My grandmother never mentioned a mark."
"Your grandmother knows more than she has told you."
Maya's anger returned.
"Apparently everyone knows something except me."
The Alpha's expression softened.
"You've been protected from this world."
"Protected?"
Maya laughed bitterly.
"Is that what you call it?"
"You were given a normal life."
"Because I was supposed to become your mate?"
The Alpha went completely still.
Maya regretted the words the moment they escaped.
But she refused to look away.
His golden eyes darkened.
"Who told you?"
"My grandmother."
Silence.
Maya saw something change in his expression.
Not anger.
Something deeper.
Something she couldn't identify.
"You don't have to accept it."
Maya blinked.
"What?"
"The bond."
She stared at him.
"Then why does everyone keep telling me I have no choice?"
The Alpha's jaw tightened.
"Because they don't understand the bond."
"Then explain it."
He stepped closer.
This time, Maya didn't retreat.
"The bond can be resisted."
Hope flickered in her chest.
"But?"
"There is always a price."
Maya's hope disappeared.
"What price?"
The Alpha's eyes moved toward the moon.
"The moon does not create bonds without purpose."
Maya frowned.
"That isn't an answer."
"It is the only answer I can give you."
Maya shook her head.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"No."
He looked directly into her eyes.
"I expect you to discover the truth yourself."
Something about his words made Maya uncomfortable.
She remembered the moonstone.
If the Alpha was telling the truth, destroying it might be her only chance.
She turned away.
"I have somewhere to be."
The Alpha's voice came behind her.
"The moonstone."
Maya froze.
Her blood went cold.
Slowly, she turned.
The Alpha was watching her.
"You know."
It wasn't a question.
Maya's silence answered him.
His expression hardened.
"Who told you about it?"
"My grandmother."
The Alpha took a step toward her.
Maya's hand tightened around the flashlight.
"Don't."
He stopped.
"You don't understand what you're attempting."
"I understand enough."
"No, you don't."
His voice became more intense.
"The moonstone is not some ordinary object you can destroy and walk away from."
"Then what is it?"
"A source of power."
Maya stared at him.
"The source of the bond?"
"Among other things."
Maya's stomach tightened.
"Then I'm going to destroy it."
The Alpha's eyes flashed.
"No."
The command carried enough force to make Maya flinch.
But she refused to surrender.
"You don't get to decide that."
"Maya."
"Don't tell me what I can and cannot do with my own life."
The Alpha stared at her.
Something almost like frustration crossed his face.
Then he lowered his voice.
"You think I want this?"
Maya paused.
"What?"
"The bond."
She stared at him.
His expression was unreadable.
"You think I chose this?"
Maya didn't answer.
The Alpha looked away.
For the first time, she saw something behind his strength.
Something human.
Pain.
"You have no idea what it means to be Alpha," he said quietly. "Every decision affects the entire pack. Every mistake becomes someone else's suffering."
Maya's anger softened slightly.
But only slightly.
"And what about me?"
His eyes returned to hers.
"That's why you need to leave."
Maya shook her head.
"No."
"You don't understand."
"Then make me understand."
He stared at her for a long moment.
Finally, he stepped aside.
Maya looked at him suspiciously.
"What are you doing?"
"Letting you go."
Her heart skipped.
"Why?"
His gaze held hers.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then he answered.
"Because I don't want you to fear me."
Something shifted inside Maya.
She didn't know why those words affected her so deeply.
The Alpha turned away.
"Go back to your grandmother."
Maya remained where she was.
"Will you come after me?"
The Alpha didn't turn.
"You should be more worried about what will happen if you continue into the forest."
Maya frowned.
"Is that a threat?"
"No."
He finally looked over his shoulder.
"It's a warning."
Maya stared at him.
The wind moved between them.
Then the Alpha disappeared into the trees.
Maya remained alone.
She should have felt relieved.
Instead, she felt strangely disappointed.
That frightened her more than anything else.
She turned toward the path ahead.
The moonstone.
That was what mattered.
She had to find it.
She had to break the bond.
She had to take back control of her life.
Maya started walking again.
But after only a few steps, she stopped.
She could still feel the Alpha's presence.
Not behind her.
Inside her.
That strange pull remained.
As if some invisible thread connected them.
Maya placed a hand against her chest.
Her heart was beating rapidly.
"You're not real," she whispered.
But she knew that was no longer true.
The wolves were real.
The pack was real.
The ancient pact was real.
And somehow, her bloodline was tied to all of it.
Maya lifted her eyes toward the moon.
The silver light seemed to grow brighter.
For a brief moment, she thought she heard a whisper carried by the wind.
Her name.
"Maya..."
She spun around.
Nothing.
Her heart raced.
Then, somewhere deep in the forest, a wolf howled.
Maya stared into the darkness.
This time, she didn't run.
She stood her ground.
Whatever destiny had waiting for her, she would face it.
But she still had one question burning in her mind.
Why did the Alpha look at her as though he had known her long before they had ever met?
And why did some hidden part of her feel as though she knew him too?
Maya turned toward the deeper forest.
The answer was waiting somewhere beyond the trees.
And she was going to find it.
