Chapter 28When the elevator doors opened on the bottom floor, Chiho and Sukanya looked long and hard into the hallway. The door started to close before they got the nerve to move. Daisuke waited patiently between them. When it started to shut, Sukanya put her foot out to block the door bumper and keep it open.
The hall was empty.
Sukanya set Daisuke’s arm over her shoulders and Chiho grabbed his belt buckle from behind to walk him down the hall one step at a time. At the outside door, they paused, saying nothing and thinking everything.
Chiho said, “I’ll get a taxi. You hold him here.” She leaned outside and looked both ways down the sidewalk.
