CHAPTER 2

Adrian Cater’s pov

I had just finished a board meeting. The directors filed out of the conference room one after another, congratulating me on another successful quarter.

“Congratulations once again, sir,” one of the executives said to me.

“The investors were impressed you've done an excellent job.” I responded with a tight smile, my mind was somewhere else thinking of my beautiful wife. As soon as all the executives were out of the door, I loosened my tie and walked into my private office, my assistant following me at the tail. “Sir, that is the last meeting for the day.” It was good to hear that because I was so tired. “I’ll hold your calls unless it is urgent,” I nodded alright away. “Get me a bottle of wine” I ordered.

“Okay sir,” I watched him scurry away to get what I wanted. The office door closes, leaving me behind alone in the silence. I had barely settled into my chair when the phone buzzed.

It was my wife, with a smile on my face, tugged at the corner of his lips as I picked.

“Hello damsel, how are you?”

“I’m fine and you?”

“I'm good”

“Where are you?” she asked playfully as I leaned back in my chair

“I’m at the office,” I murmured.

“So what are you doing now? She asked softly.

“I had a meeting with all the executives of my company but I am done.”

“Okay, Guess what I'm close to your office?”

“Nearby ?”

“Yeah, I wanted to see you

I dragged a hand over my face.

“Vanessa…”

“Yes, I want to see you.”

“This isn't a good idea Vanessa," I protested.

“Not at my office,” her coming to my office alone was a bad idea. And I didn't know how to tell her that without sounding rude. Moreover, when Vanessa sets her mind on something, you can't persuade her otherwise.

“When has that ever stopped us?” I let out a quiet sigh.

“You know I’m married to your best friend”

“And yet you picked up rather than picking her’s.” The silence stretched between us.

I’ll be there in 20” she hung up before I even had the chance to say something. I stared at my phone screen for several seconds before placing the phone on my desk. 20 minutes later my assistant knocked on my door.

“Come in” The door is pushed open, you have an unannounced visitor, sir, should i let her in?”

She opened the door sir you have a visitor name vanessa

Okay let her come in, he said quickly

The door opened and she walked in wearing a short grown with a confident smile and his assistant closed the door.

You look beautiful

But you know you shouldn't be here. Vanessa is not right at all

this is my office he said

But I'm here she stepped closer looking at my face

You look exhausted” she said

It's been a long day for you right ?

She smile gently

Yes it is, he responded.

Then let's make it better, Adrian.

He hesitated.

You know I can ask you to leave.
