9 IT WAS eleven o'clock and a hot morning. Guelvada got out of bed; bathed; shaved; put on a dressing-gown; went out on to the veranda. He sat there, drinking coffee, humming softly to himself, thinking over the implications of the very interesting situation in which he found himself. Eventually he went into his sitting-room; telephoned the Leonard Hotel. He asked to be put on to Mr. Julian Isles. He waited, smiling pleasantly to himself. When Isles came on the telephone, Guelvada asked: "Mr. Isles?... Permit me to introduce myself. My name is Ernest Guelvada.
