Chapter Fifteen – The Reckoning

751 Words
The boardroom was ice. Adrian stood at the head of the table, his presence commanding, his tailored suit a shield of power. Yet inside, his fury simmered a storm waiting to strike. The long mahogany table was lined with men and women who had once admired him, now shifting uneasily in their seats, glancing at him as though he were both savior and threat. “Mr. Knight,” began Marcus Hale, the oldest board member, adjusting his glasses, “the recent press surrounding your personal life has shaken investor confidence. Knight Empire isn’t just your company it’s thousands of jobs, billions in assets. We must address whether your… entanglement compromises your judgment.” Adrian’s gaze swept the room like a blade. “My personal life is not this board’s concern.” “On the contrary,” Marcus pressed, his voice oily. “Your choices directly affect our public image. Your relationship with Miss Carter” “Her name is Elena,” Adrian snapped, the sound like thunder against the polished walls. Meanwhile… Elena’s heels clicked softly down the school hallway, but the air felt heavy, hostile. She could feel eyes on her, the teachers who once greeted her warmly now offering tight, polite smiles. At the staffroom, conversations halted when she entered. Whispers floated behind her: “How long do you think she’ll last?” … “It’s a distraction, really. The kids deserve better.” Elena tried to keep her head high, but every word was a dagger. During lunch duty, one parent approached her, arms folded. “Miss Carter, I have to ask are you even planning to stay? Or will you run off when Mr. Knight finds someone else? Our children need stability, not scandals.” Elena’s throat tightened, but she forced herself to answer calmly. “I love teaching your children. That hasn’t changed, and it won’t.” The parent sniffed, unconvinced, before walking away. Elena leaned against the lockers, the sting of humiliation threatening to break her. Back in the boardroom… Adrian tapped a button, and the screen at the end of the room flickered to life. Emails, financial transfers, recordings all evidence of Daniel Cole’s betrayal. Gasps rippled across the table. “While you waste your breath questioning my relationship,” Adrian said coldly, “this company was nearly brought down from within. By someone you trusted. By someone I trusted.” The screen displayed Daniel’s face. Shock spread. Whispers erupted. “Daniel leaked financial strategies to competitors. He sold confidential files to the press. He jeopardized Knight Empire for profit and for his own envy. That is your scandal. Not Elena.” He slammed the remote down. “Don’t confuse my private life with corporate betrayal. I will not tolerate it.” For a moment, silence reigned. Adrian’s eyes blazed, daring anyone to challenge him. At the same time… Elena walked into her classroom, her heart heavy. The children, oblivious to the cruel whispers of adults, greeted her with wide smiles. “Miss Carter! Miss Carter!” little Sophie cried, holding up a crayon drawing. It showed Elena at a chalkboard, with Adrian beside her, holding her hand. Elena blinked back tears. “Is that me?” Sophie nodded eagerly. “And that’s your prince. Don’t listen to what the other teachers say. You’re still our favorite.” The room filled with laughter and innocence, and Elena’s chest loosened. The world outside might doubt her, but here, in this room, she was still Elena. Still enough. Back in the boardroom… When the meeting finally adjourned, Adrian knew the battle wasn’t over. The board was shaken, investors still wary. But he had made one thing clear: he would not sacrifice Elena to save appearances. As he left, Marcus muttered under his breath, “You’ll bring us all down for her.” Adrian paused, turning just enough for his voice to cut through the room. “No. She’s the one who keeps me standing. And without her, none of this matters.” That evening, Adrian found Elena waiting in the penthouse, still in her school clothes, exhaustion in her eyes. “How was it?” she asked. He crossed the room, pulling her into his arms before answering. “The board tried to break me. The world tried to break you. But we’re still here.” Elena leaned against him, her voice soft but steady. “Then we’ll keep standing. Together.” And in the glow of the city lights, their resolve was stronger than ever.
