In Denial

Students rushed out of their classrooms as the bell rings, signaling that classes have ended. “My car’s here, I have to say bye-bye now” Bree turns and hugs her friends. “I’ll be going with Bree,” Keira said. Isn’t your driver, gonna fetch you?” Em asks. I’m going to have a sleepover with her, my parents already know. Her mom asked me to tutor her in Math” “I doubt you two will study, you two are just going to play. I miss having sleepovers too,” Eli sighs. “Why don’t you come with us then?” Bree asks as she walks towards her car. “You know I can’t” “Oh okay then see you tomorrow, take care guys” “Bye” Em and Eli chorused as they. When Bree’s car was already out of sight, Em faced Eli “How about you, Elise? “My driver called, he said the cars having a bit of trouble and he’s gonna be late.” “Then I’ll wait with you but just a bit ok, I need to go before five.” “Isn’t your driver gonna fetch you?” It was her turn to ask. “No, I’ll be commuting, the bus stop’s just a few minutes walk from her,e,” Em said “The school permitted you to commute? Is that allowed?” Eli asks. As preventive measures from k********g and other threats among rich kids, the school requires its students to have a school service; otherwise, they won’t allow them to leave the school. For some to get past this policy, they have to sign a waiver stating that the school doesn’t have any liabilities to them once they get out of school. Among these students are those who like to commute or have bicycles. “I got a pass earlier and my father also called the school” “Wah, I want to try commuting too! Where are you going anyways? Have a date? With whom?” Eli teases as she nudges Em’s side “I have a date with my dad, he said he has a meeting and he can’t fetch me so we’ll just meet halfway.” “Oh really, I thought you’re going on a date, where are you two going anyway?” “It’s mom’s death anniversary, we’ll visit her.” “Ah, I see, How many years has it been, 7? And your dad’s still devoted, I admire him for that.” “Yeah he’s really fateful to mom, good for me, ‘coz I think I’m not ready yet for stepmom.” “Then why don’t you just ride with me, I’ll ask the driver to drop you off at your meeting place.” Eli offers. “No thanks! I’ won’t let you ruin my chance to take a bus!” Em blurts, gaining a laugh from Eli. “So even you dream of something like that!” Of course! This is once in a lifetime, actually, this is my second time, It is kind of a good feeling, doing things on your own.” “Well, I wish I could do that too,” Elise said, envious of her friend’s adventure. “Just take care, okay, it's really dangerous outside, especially for us." ”You’re scaring me! You know, don’t worry too much, I can handle myself, and besides, I’m not the only one, look, others commute too. “Hey, how are you and Dianne aren’t you getting close already, you thought we didn’t see you, you’re talking to her earlier?” Em said in a teasing tone. “Hey! It is nothing like that! That is just me being friendly okay. And why didn’t you tell me she is your seatmate? If I have known, I wouldn’t have sat there.” Eli pouts as she tries to hide her embarrassment. “She’s been our classmate for two years, and my seatmate for almost all our subjects! How can you not know that! Besides, I thought you were already making your move! Don’t say you didn’t like it, you were smiling like an i***t the whole time!” Em retorted. “Hey! Stop teasing; I am already confused as it is. Elise pleads and hugs Em. “Do you like her? It seems Keira is right; everybody is gay. Well if you like her, go on with it, don’t think about the dare.” Em pats her shoulder. “I’m not gay! Stop saying I’m gay, I think I just want to be friends with her, that’s it” Elise almost as defensive as she could get, she honestly thinks she was saying the words to herself than to Em. “Okay! Okay! No need to be gritty here.” Em said laughing at her reaction. “You always tease me like that, I hate it.” “I won’t tease you anymore… for now” “Hey, Melody…” “What do you know about her? Are you close with her? You have the same surname, are you related?” Eli asks trying not to sound too eager. “You don’t seem to be too interested huh,” Em said sarcastically. “First I don’t know much about her, second, we aren’t that close ‘coz we are from a different circle of friends, but we chat sometimes like “hi, hello, did you get the right answer, isn’t the weather good, that stuff” and third maybe we are related, my dad said that all Park are related. Maybe from the same roots, but different lineage. Does that answer your question, Ms. Ham?” Em asks. “Not much, but that will do,” Eli said “It’s already five, I need to go now. Sorry I can’t see you off.” Em said gathering her stuff. “Oh, it’s okay, You didn’t need to, but thanks anyway for saving me from boredom, call me when you get home,” Eli said while accompanying Melody to the gate. “Just call whoever gets home first” Em turns in for a hug. “And Eli…Admit it, the truth will set you free!” the girl whispered and hurriedly run outside. “Hey! I said I’m not--- argh. Make sure I won’t see you tomorrow! I’m not going to call you.” Eli immediately turned red with rage. While Em, just sticks her tongue, and waved her hand, “Call me okay!” “That girl… Where the hell is my driver…” Eli can only groan. A few minutes later, her driver arrives. “Mr. Shin! I thought you’re not going to fetch me, I was getting ready to ride on a bus” Eli pouts, and pretended to be mad. “Sorry, Eli, the maintenance took longer than I thought, did you wait too long?” the driver stated as she carries Eli’s belongings to the car.” “Well thanks to Em I didn’t felt it, but she left a while ago, can we go to a drive-thru, Mr. Shin. I’m starving, I think I want some burger.” “It will be just a short ride home, you can just ask the maid to prepare you something and your father doesn’t want you to eat fast food too often.” “He won’t know, You won’t tell him, right? You’re hungry too, what do you want, I’ll buy a burger as big as this, please, I’m really starving.” She gestures the size of the burger while trying to show her best charm to him. “Really...this kid, trying to make me an accomplice to her crime and bribing me for it. Who am I to refuse?” the driver giving in to Eli. “Yes!” she exclaimed as she grabs a pack of chocolates. “Meanwhile, I’ll eat this.” She was enjoying her chocolates when she spotted a familiar figure on the sidewalks a few meters away from her car. “Mr. Shin, that girl is my classmate, let’s give her a ride.” “Uh okay,” the driver honks the horn to get the girl’s attention while Eli rolls down her window. “Dianne!”
