Damien lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. The house was quiet but his mind wouldn't stop racing. May was upstairs in the guest room. Asleep and safe. But he couldn't sleep. Every time he closed his eyes, his mind drifted back to earlier. To the way May had looked at him when she changed his bandage. To the way her hands had been so gentle. So careful. To the conversation they'd had during cards. About why he pushed people away. *You're not going to lose me.* Her words echoed in his head, over and over.
