Ewan glanced across the field as Alexander did the same. For a moment, the brothers simply stared at one another. Neither smiled.
Then Ewan lifted his sword, and Alexander answered. The crowd erupted. Serena sighed.
"Of course."
Katherine laughed softly beside her, but didn't say no more. Then Serena's gaze returned to William. He was standing beside her father. James said something to him, and he nodded. There was no arrogance in the gesture. No attempt to impress.
Just confidence.
Then, unexpectedly, William looked toward the stands staraight toward her. Serena froze when their eyes met. For one impossible second, everything around her seemed to disappear.
William's expression changed. Only slightly.
His eyebrows lifted, then the corner of his mouth curved—not that anyone could have noticed any of this beneath his helmet. But he had seen her.
"Serena?" one of her many cousins called.
"I'm watching the match."
"You haven't looked at the match," another chimed in.
"I have."
"Were you looking at Beaufort?" the first cousin asked again.
"I was looking in the general direction of Beaufort."
Katherine made a thoughtful sound. "Ah. Of course."
The horn sounded. Serena turned back toward the field. The tournament began
