The morning after the masquerade ball, Silverwood was abuzz with talk of the previous night's events. The ball had been a spectacular success, but the sudden appearance of the wolves had left everyone shaken. Lily woke up early, her mind still reeling from the night's excitement and terror. She had so many questions, and Alex seemed to be the only one who could answer them.
As she dressed and made her way to the café, she couldn't help but replay the events in her mind. The grand hall, the enchanting music, the mysterious masks, and the sudden chaos. But most of all, she remembered Alex—his strength, his determination, and the way he had looked at her with such concern.
The café was unusually quiet that morning, a stark contrast to the lively chatter of the previous day. Lily busied herself with brewing coffee and preparing pastries, hoping the familiar routine would help calm her thoughts. She had just taken a tray of muffins out of the oven when the doorbell jingled, and Alex walked in.
"Lily," he greeted, his expression serious but warm.
"Alex," she replied, her heart skipping a beat. "I'm glad you're here. I... I have so many questions."
"I figured you might," he said, approaching the counter. "Do you have some time to talk?"
Lily nodded, wiping her hands on her apron. "Let's sit in the back."
They made their way to the small table in the back room, away from any prying ears. Alex waited until they were seated before he spoke.
"I'm sure you're wondering about what happened last night," he began.
"Yes," Lily said, leaning forward. "Who were those... wolves? And why did they attack?"
Alex sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Those wolves were wild animals. We had heard rumors they might target Silverwood, but we didn't expect them to attack during the ball."
Lily's eyes widened. "But why here? And why now? It's not natural for wolves to attack a town like this."
"Silverwood has always been a place of interest," Alex explained. "There's something special about this town. As for the timing, it was likely because of the monarch's visit. They probably saw it as an opportunity to make a statement."
"The monarch," Lily repeated, shaking her head. "Kyle, right? I can't believe we have royalty visiting our town, and I never knew."
Alex chuckled softly. "There's a lot you don't know about this town, Lily. But there's a reason for that. We try to keep certain things hidden. It's safer for everyone that way."
Lily felt a chill run down her spine. "Certain things? What do you mean?"
Alex hesitated, his eyes searching hers. "Lily, there are things about Silverwood—and about me—that are hard to explain. But I promise, when the time is right, you'll understand everything."
Lily's mind raced with possibilities, but she sensed that pressing Alex for answers now would be futile. "I trust you, Alex," she said softly. "I just need some time to process all of this."
"I understand," Alex replied, his expression softening. "Take all the time you need. And if you ever have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. I'll always be here for you."
Lily nodded, feeling a sense of reassurance despite the lingering questions. "Thank you, Alex."
They sat in comfortable silence for a few moments, the warmth of the café providing a stark contrast to the cold uncertainty that had settled over Lily's mind. As she watched Alex leave, she couldn't shake the feeling that there was so much more to Silverwood than met the eye.
Later that evening, as Lily sat in her cozy living room, she decided to do some research. She opened her laptop and began searching for information about Silverwood. To her surprise, there was almost nothing. No detailed history, no significant news, not even a mention of the masquerade ball or the monarch's visit.
"This doesn't make sense," Lily muttered to herself. "Why would a king visit such a small, obscure town? And why is there no information about it online?"
Her thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door. She opened it to find her neighbor, Mrs. Thompson, standing there with a concerned expression.
"Lily, dear, I heard what happened last night. Are you alright?" Mrs. Thompson asked.
"I'm fine, thank you," Lily replied, inviting her in. "But I have so many questions."
"About the wolves, I presume?" Mrs. Thompson said, taking a seat. "It was quite the shock to all of us."
"Yes, but also about the town," Lily said, sitting across from her. "I can't find any information about Silverwood online. It's like it doesn't exist."
Mrs. Thompson's expression turned serious. "Silverwood has always been a bit of a mystery. There are things about this town that are kept hidden for a reason."
"Like what?" Lily asked, leaning forward.
"That's not for me to say," Mrs. Thompson replied. "But trust me, dear, everything will make sense in time. Just be patient and stay close to those you trust."
Lily nodded, her mind racing with questions. As Mrs. Thompson left, she couldn't help but feel that she was on the brink of discovering something significant. She knew she had to dig deeper, to uncover the secrets that Silverwood and its inhabitants were hiding.
