Chapter 16: The Unwelcome Guest

1165 Words
The days following Vanessa's return were a whirlwind of activity. Vanessa's presence in Silverwood brought a renewed energy to the town, and she quickly reconnected with old friends and acquaintances. For Lily, it was a time of adjustment and reflection. She tried to balance her work at the café with her growing relationship with Alex, all while dealing with the insecurities Vanessa's return had stirred within her. One evening, as Lily was closing up the café, she heard a familiar voice. "Lily, need any help?" It was Vanessa, standing in the doorway with a friendly smile. Lily hesitated for a moment before responding. "Sure, Vanessa. I could use an extra hand." Vanessa stepped inside, grabbing a cloth to wipe down the tables. "So, how are you settling in? Silverwood can be a bit overwhelming at first." Lily smiled politely. "It's been good. Everyone's been very welcoming." Vanessa nodded, her eyes scanning the room. "I'm glad to hear that. Alex is really nice to you, you know. He talks about you sometimes." Lily's heart warmed at the mention of Alex, but she couldn't help but wonder if Vanessa knew the full extent of their relationship. "He's been wonderful. I'm really happy here." As they worked together, Vanessa continued to share stories of her past with Alex, recounting their high school days and adventures. Lily listened politely, but she couldn't help but feel a twinge of jealousy each time Vanessa mentioned a shared memory with Alex. "You know," Vanessa said, a wistful look in her eyes, "Alex was my first love. We dated for a while back in high school. It wasn't anything serious because we always knew werewolves are meant to be with their mates. But he was such a good boyfriend—always so caring and protective." Lily's heart skipped a beat, and she tried to mask her surprise and discomfort. "Really? He really is a nice person." Vanessa smiled, her eyes lighting up with the memories. "Yeah, it feels like ages ago now. We had some great times together. Alex was always there for me, especially when things got tough. We even had this silly hope that when we turned eighteen, we'd find out we were mates." Lily's eyes widened slightly. "Oh wow" Vanessa laughed softly, nodding her head. "Yeah, but we made a small agreement that if we didn't find our true mates by a certain age, we'd become chosen mates. It was more of a safety net, I suppose, to ensure we'd always have each other." Lily felt a pang of confusion and jealousy. Chosen mates? She had never heard Alex mention that before. The depth of Vanessa and Alex's past was starting to feel overwhelming. Later that night, Lily found herself alone in her small apartment. She sat by the window, looking out at the moonlit sky. The conversation with Vanessa had left her feeling uneasy. She trusted Alex, but the depth of his history with Vanessa was hard to ignore. Just then, her phone buzzed. It was a message from Alex. Alex: "Hey, can I come over? I need to talk to you." Lily's heart skipped a beat. She quickly replied. Lily: "Of course. I'll be here." A few minutes later, there was a knock at her door. She opened it to find Alex standing there, looking troubled. "What's wrong, Alex?" Lily asked, stepping aside enter her apartment. She could sense the tension in his demeanor as he walked in and took a seat on the couch. "What's wrong, Alex?" she asked, her voice filled with concern. Lily sat down beside him. Alex ran a hand through his hair, sighing heavily. Alex took a deep breath, running a hand through his hair. "Lily, I need to tell you something. They sat in silence for a moment, the weight of their conversation settling around them. Finally, Alex spoke again, his voice hesitant. "There's one more thing I need to tell you. It's something I've been holding back, and I need you to know the truth." Lily looked up at him, her eyes filled with curiosity and concern. "What is it, Alex?" He took a deep breath, his eyes locking onto hers. "Lily, I'm the Alpha of this pack. That means, if you accept me as your mate, you'll be the Luna. It's a huge responsibility, and I didn't want to overwhelm you with it right away." Lily's eyes widened in shock. "The Alpha? That makes me... the Luna?" Alex nodded, his expression serious. "Yes. Being the Luna means you'll be a leader, my equal in guiding and protecting the pack. You'll have to make tough decisions, support the pack members, and sometimes put the pack's needs above your own. It's not an easy role, but it's incredibly important." Lily took a deep breath, the weight of his words sinking in. "I... I don't know what to say. This is a lot to process." Alex's grip on her hand tightened. "I know it's overwhelming, but you're strong, Lily. Stronger than you realize. As the Luna, you'll have the respect and loyalty of the pack. You'll be their confidant, their guide, and their protector. And most importantly, you'll have me by your side, every step of the way." She hesitated for a moment, then took a deep breath. " What are chosen mates?" Alex's expression shifted slightly, a hint of surprise and something else—perhaps concern—crossing his features. He gently took her hands "Chosen mates," he began, his voice low and serious, "are werewolves who decide to be together even if they haven't found their true mate. It's like making a commitment to each other out of choice rather than fate." Lily absorbed this information, her mind racing with questions. her eyes searching his for answers. Alex's gaze softened as he looked at her, a mixture of affection and determination in his eyes. "Vanessa and I... we talked about it when we were younger. It was more of a safety net, a promise that if we didn't find our true mates, we would choose each other." Lily felt a pang of jealousy and insecurity, but she pushed it aside. She needed to understand. "And how do you know that we're true mates?" Alex reached out, gently cupping her face in his hands. "Lily, from the moment I met you, I felt a connection, something deep and undeniable. Being with you feels right in a way I've never experienced before. That's how I know." She looked into his eyes, seeing the sincerity and warmth there. "It doesn't matter," she said finally, her voice firm but gentle. "What matters is that we're here now, and we have each other. The past is the past." Alex smiled, his eyes filled with relief and admiration. "You're right, Lily. What matters is us, right here, right now." She nodded slowly, her mind racing with the implications of what he'd just told her. "Okay, Alex. I trust you. We'll face whatever comes our way, together."
