The ballroom of the Metropolitan Club was a glittering sea of black ties, silk gowns, and silver trays carrying crystal champagne flutes. High society had turned out in full force for Lord Sterling’s annual foundation gala, but everyone knew the real main event was Julian Cross and his new, mysterious fiancée.
When the heavy gilded doors opened, a subtle hush rippled through the room.
Elena stepped onto the polished parquet floor beside Julian, her hand resting comfortably in the crook of his arm. She wore a floor-length dark emerald dress that draped effortlessly against her silhouette, the deep jewel tone making her fair skin and dark eyes striking. Beside her, Julian looked imposing in a midnight-blue tuxedo, his posture radiating pure authority.
"Look straight ahead and keep smiling," Julian murmured softly, leaning down as if whispering a private endearment into her ear. "There are at least four photojournalists stationed near the fountain."
"I see them," Elena replied under her breath, tilting her head toward him with a warm, radiant smile. "And I see Lord Sterling near the main bar. Let's go secure your trust fund."
They moved smoothly through the crowd, navigating polite pleasantries and brief congratulations from city council members and corporate executives. Every eyes was on them, evaluating every glance, gesture, and touch. But instead of faltering under the scrutiny, Elena leaned into the role.
"Lord Sterling," Julian greeted as they approached the distinguished, white-haired patriarch standing near a marble pillar.
"Julian," Lord Sterling said, his deep voice carrying a seasoned weight. He turned his sharp gaze toward Elena, taking in her composure. "And Miss Vance. Clarissa told me you two would be attending."
"We wouldn't miss your foundation's most important night of the year, Lord Sterling," Elena said smoothly, extending a hand. "My family has long admired the work your foundation does for urban youth programs."
Lord Sterling shook her hand, an appreciative gleam entering his eyes. "A Vance with an eye for community development. Refreshing. Your father was a principled man, Miss Vance. I was sorry to hear about his recent health struggles."
"Thank you, sir," Elena said, her voice remaining steady without a trace of hesitation. "He is recovering well, especially now that the future of Vance Logistics is secure alongside Cross Global."
Before Sterling could reply, Marcus appeared beside him, a glass of whiskey in hand and a thin, dangerous smile on his lips.
"Ah, the happy couple," Marcus sneered softly. "Lord Sterling, I hope my cousin hasn't been boring you with corporate merger talk on a night dedicated to charity."
"Not at all, Marcus," Sterling replied coolly. "Miss Vance was just sharing her thoughts on our foundation work."
"Fascinating," Marcus said, turning his sharp gaze onto Elena. "Though I suppose when a engagement happens so suddenly—overnight, really—there's very little time for anything other than business, isn't there?"
Elena turned to face Marcus directly, her eyes calm and unwavering. "Some decisions require months of hesitation, Mr. Cross. Others, when the alignment of vision and respect is obvious, take no time at all. Julian and I didn't see the need to delay our lives for the sake of public spectacle."
Julian stepped slightly closer to Elena, resting a supportive hand against her waist. The gesture felt entirely natural, sending a quiet wave of authority across the circle. "Marcus seems concerned with our timeline, Lord Sterling, because he measures progress in months rather than results."
Lord Sterling let out a short, approving laugh that cut through the tension. "Well said, Julian. Action beats hesitation every time." He turned to Marcus, his expression hardening slightly. "I believe the board's vote on the trust release is scheduled for Thursday morning, Marcus. Based on what I've seen tonight, I see no reason to hold up the transition."
Marcus’s jaw clenched, his eyes flashing with fury as he realized he had lost his final opportunity to turn Sterling against them. "Of course, Lord Sterling. Whatever the board decides." He took a sharp sip of his drink and walked away into the crowd.
Once Sterling excused himself to greet other guests, Julian looked down at Elena, his dark eyes burning with an intensity that took her breath away.
"You completely shut him down," Julian murmured, his voice low and rich.
"We make a good team, Mr. Cross," Elena whispered back, looking up at him.
"More than good," Julian said quietly, his hand lingering at her waist as the music filled the grand ballroom. "Let's dance, Elena. Let's give them something real to talk about."
