Chapter 8: Unmasked

600 Words
The swelling orchestra music drifted through the grand ballroom, but inside the crowded venue, Elena felt as though she and Julian were standing in a vacuum. He led her onto the center of the dance floor, placing one hand firm and steady on her waist while guiding her hand into his. The gesture was deliberate, synchronized, and strikingly intimate. As they moved into a slow waltz, the surrounding crowd of executives and high-society socialites blurred into background noise. "You look like you're actually enjoying yourself," Julian murmured, his dark eyes fixed on hers. "I enjoy winning," Elena replied, keeping her gaze steady. "And watching your cousin realize he lost Lord Sterling was worth every second of playing dress-up." "It wasn't just play," Julian said quietly. His grip on her waist tightened by a fraction of an inch, pulling her slightly closer as he guided her through a smooth turn. "You handled Sterling with more genuine tact than half my executive board." Elena felt a flutter in her pulse that had nothing to do with corporate strategy. "He knew my father. He respected him. It wasn't hard to speak the truth about what Vance Logistics built." "Your father raised a formidable daughter," Julian noted. "Which makes me wonder why you let yourself feel backed into a corner when you came to my office on Sunday." Elena paused, meeting his gaze with a faint, mocking smile. "Because a thirty-million-dollar buyout isn't something you turn down when your family's life work is on the line, Mr. Cross. Don't mistake survival instinct for weakness." "I never mistook you for weak, Elena," Julian whispered, his voice dropping into a low, velvet register that sent a sudden spike of warmth down her spine. "In fact, you're the first person in five years who hasn't looked at me with either fear or greed." Before Elena could formulate a response, the music faded, replaced by politest applause from the surrounding guests. Julian smoothly brought them to a stop, though he didn't immediately let go of her hand. "Julian," a quiet voice called out from behind them. Mark, Julian’s chief legal security advisor, was standing near the edge of the dance floor, holding a secure satellite phone. His face was entirely devoid of color. Julian’s posture shifted back into complete business rigidity in an instant. "Excuse me for a moment," he told Elena, stepping toward Mark. Elena watched from a few feet away as Mark leaned in, whispering urgent words into Julian's ear. With every second that passed, the icy mask on Julian's face grew darker and more dangerous. "What is it?" Elena asked, stepping up to them as Mark pulled back. Julian looked at her, his eyes cold with lethal focus. "Marcus didn't just target your father's medical files, Elena. Mark's team just intercepted an unauthorized transfer attempt from Vance Logistics' primary holding account." Elena’s heart slammed into her ribs. "What transfer? The thirty million?" "Five million of it was routed ten minutes ago toward an offshore shell account in the Caymans," Mark explained quietly. "Someone inside your father's remaining finance team used a master override key." "Marcus," Elena whispered, horror and rage warring inside her. "He knew he lost Lord Sterling, so he's trying to frame my team for embezzlement to invalidate the merger contract." "He's trying," Julian corrected, stepping so close she could feel the heat radiating off him. He held out his hand to her. "Mark, get the car brought around to the side entrance. We're going to Vance headquarters right now." Elena grabbed his hand without a second of hesitation. "Let's catch a thief."
