Chapter 30A mist rose out of the placid lake. It shrouded the shore in a blanket of grey and muffled the clumsy footsteps that echoed in the deathly silence. Riley was running, stumbling over loose rocks, cutting her arms and legs on the tree branches that appeared in her path, and blindly searched for her father. She could hear his cries for help, but she couldn't see him in the thick mist. “Dad! Dad!” Her heart thrashed wildly inside of her ribcage. The air was humid and laced with a strong earthy scent. Her dirty clothes, a mass of tattered grey, clung tightly to her body and weighed her down. “Riley…Riley…” a ghostly whisper drifted from the distance and chilled her to the bone.
