Chapter 12 – Bound in Fire

Blood. It spread dark and fast across Adrian’s side, seeping through his shirt, staining the floor in tiny drops. The sight of it made my stomach lurch, but worse was the burn ripping across my ribs, the echo of his wound searing into me. I pressed a trembling hand against my side. No blood there—nothing but skin and the faint glow of the ring under my wrist. But the pain was real. Too real. The hunter leader laughed, circling us with predatory calm. “See? One cut, and you both falter. How poetic.” “Stay back,” Adrian growled, his voice strained but steady. His staff lifted again, unwavering despite the crimson soaking his clothes. “You can’t fight him like this,” I hissed. “You’re bleeding—” He cut me off without looking at me. “Focus. Anchor yourself. Don’t let the bond consume you.” “Anchor myself? Adrian, I’m anchored to you! If you go down, I—” “Elena!” His voice snapped like a whip, pulling me back from panic. His silver eyes locked onto mine, blazing even through the haze of pain. “We don’t have the luxury of fear. Do you understand?” My chest heaved. The ring on my wrist pulsed, faster and brighter, like it was syncing with his heartbeat. The pull surged again, whispering that if I gave in, if I stopped resisting, I could take his pain, lighten his burden. “No,” I muttered, shaking my head. “That’s insane.” The hunter leader’s smile sharpened. “But you want to. I see it. The thread begs you to surrender. Take his wounds into yourself. Be the martyr. Be the sacrifice.” “Don’t listen!” Adrian barked. He shifted forward, his staff colliding with the hunter’s blade in a shower of sparks. The impact reverberated through the chamber, through me, rattling my bones. I staggered, clutching my side, every clash echoing in my body. My vision blurred. Marla’s voice rose from the edge of the chamber, sharp and furious. “She can’t hold much longer. If you don’t end this—” “Then help!” I shouted at her, desperation cracking my voice. “Do something!” Marla’s eyes burned into me, but she didn’t move. “This is your bond, girl. Your fight.” The hunter pressed harder, driving Adrian back with relentless strikes. Every movement made him stumble, blood trailing with each step. My own strength faltered in tandem, as if his body and mine were collapsing together. “No,” I gasped, forcing myself upright. “No, I won’t—” The pull surged again. This time I didn’t resist. Light flared from my wrist, spreading up my arm in a cascade of pale fire. It wrapped around the staff, humming in rhythm with my heartbeat. The hunter’s black eyes widened, just for a second. Adrian glanced back at me, shock flickering across his face. “Elena—” But I was already moving. The bond guided me, pushing my body into the fight beside him. Our staffs clashed against the hunter’s blade in perfect rhythm, my strikes weaving into Adrian’s as though we were one. Each impact burned, but the fire wasn’t only pain—it was power. The hunter snarled, his composure slipping. “You dare use the bond?” I met his gaze, my voice raw. “You said if he falls, I fall. Then I guess you’ll have to get through both of us.” For the first time, his smile faltered. His blade trembled under our combined force. The chamber’s sigils flared brighter, feeding the glow around us. And for a heartbeat, I thought—we might win. Then the great clock above the chamber struck eleven. One hour until midnight. The hunter’s grin returned, crueler than before. “Tick, tock.” The echo of the clock’s chime seemed to cling to the air, each note heavy as stone. Eleven tolls, each one dragging us closer to midnight. The hunter leader straightened, blade gleaming in the chamber’s glow. “One more hour,” he purred. “And the thread will tighten until it strangles you both.” Adrian’s staff clashed against his blade again, sparks raining across the floor. “You won’t live to see it.” They moved in a blur, their strikes shaking the stone. I followed instinct more than thought, my staff weaving into Adrian’s rhythm, every motion guided by the bond pulsing between us. But each clash hurt. Each time Adrian’s weapon met the hunter’s, my ribs screamed, my arms shook, my pulse spiked as though my own body bore the impact. The bond wasn’t just guiding me anymore—it was consuming me. “Elena!” Adrian’s voice cut through the haze. “Don’t let it pull too deep!” “I don’t exactly have an off switch!” I shouted back, breath ragged. The hunter leader laughed. “Yes. Let it swallow you. The thread was never meant to save—it was meant to bind. He dies, you die. And the more you resist, the tighter it coils.” My grip faltered. The staff slipped, and the hunter’s blade hissed toward me. Adrian intercepted, his staff catching the strike inches from my chest. The shock threw him sideways, blood dripping heavier down his side. Pain flared white-hot through me, buckling my knees. “Adrian!” I gasped, staggering toward him. His hand shot out, steadying me even as his own body trembled. “Breathe. Anchor. You’re stronger than this.” The lie was so steady, so certain, I almost believed it. From the far end of the chamber, Marla’s voice rang out, sharp and cutting. She traced symbols into the air, light flaring around her fingertips. “If you can’t sever the bond, then at least shield it—” “Don’t touch her!” Adrian roared, the force of his voice echoing against the walls. Marla froze mid-sigil, her lips pressed tight. “If she breaks, we all do.” The hunter’s grin widened. “Ah. So even your allies see the truth. You are not salvation, girl. You are the weakness that will unravel him.” Rage flared through me, hotter than fear. “Shut up.” The glow on my wrist brightened, fire racing up my arm. I swung with all the strength I had left. Light cracked against the hunter’s blade, forcing him a step back. His eyes narrowed, black swallowing every flicker of white. “Interesting. The thread feeds her faster than I thought.” Adrian’s voice was low, fierce. “Because she’s mine.” Something inside me twisted at the word, but there was no time to think. The hunter struck again, faster, harder. Adrian met him head-on, our staffs clashing against shadow steel. I mirrored his moves, every strike fueled by desperation. But with each moment, the bond grew heavier. I felt his wounds as though they were mine, his blood burning on my ribs, his heartbeat rattling in my chest. My vision blurred at the edges, stars pricking the corners of my eyes. “Elena, hold on,” Adrian urged, his silver eyes blazing even as his body faltered. “I—” My voice cracked. “I can’t…” The hunter lunged, blade raised for a killing strike. Adrian shoved me aside, taking the blow across his arm instead of his chest. Blood sprayed, hot and dark. The pain ripped through me too, tearing a scream from my throat. My body hit the floor, staff clattering from my grip. For a moment I couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think, only drown in fire that wasn’t entirely mine. Through the haze, I saw Adrian still standing, staff in his good hand, silver eyes alight with defiance even as blood dripped to the floor. The hunter smiled, cruel and patient. “Yes. Break him. Break her. At midnight, I’ll claim what’s left.” The clock struck again. Half an hour remained.
