CHAPTER 4

THE FAMILY TRAP “Mother, we need to talk,” Sarah said, standing in the grand hallway of the Evans family estate. The air felt cold like it always did when she entered this house. Grace, her adoptive mother, sat on a velvet chair near the window, sipping tea as if Sarah hadn’t spoken. “Mother,” Sarah tried again, her voice firmer. “We need to talk.” Grace finally looked up, her expression calm, but her eyes held no warmth. “What is it, Sarah? I’m busy.” Sarah swallowed the lump in her throat. She wasn’t going to back down now. “I know everything. About Michael. About Elena. And about the inheritance you signed away.” Grace’s lips curled into a small, almost amused smile. “And? What do you expect me to say?” Sarah stepped closer, her hands trembling. “I expected... I don’t know. An explanation? Maybe even an apology?” Grace put her teacup down with a small clink. “Apology? To you?” She laughed softly. “Oh, Sarah. You were always so naive.” Sarah’s heart clenched. “What do you mean?” Grace sighed and stood up, walking slowly toward her. “You were never truly part of this family, Sarah. Elena was the one who mattered. You were... how should I put it? A convenience. A way to look charitable to society, to have the appearance of a perfect family.” Sarah took a step back, her chest tightening. “I was just... for show?” Grace nodded, her expression cold and indifferent. “Yes. Elena is the true heir, the one who deserves everything. You were never more than a burden, Sarah.” Sarah’s hands clenched into fists. “A burden? I loved you! I tried so hard to be part of this family, to be good enough!” Grace tilted her head as if considering her words. “You were never good enough, Sarah. You never belonged here.” Tears welled up in Sarah’s eyes, but she forced them back. “Why? Why would you do this to me? I’m your daughter!” Grace’s eyes hardened. “No, Sarah. You were never my daughter. Elena is my real child. You were just... extra. And now, it’s time for you to leave.” Sarah’s breath hitched. “You want me to leave?” Grace nodded, her face blanks. “Quietly. Without causing a scene. You’ve caused enough trouble. Just go and start over somewhere else. If you stay, I’ll make sure you’re rejected from every social circle. You’ll have nothing left.” Sarah stared at her, feeling as though her world was crumbling. But then, something inside her shifted. The pain, the betrayal—it all turned into anger. “I’m not leaving,” Sarah said, her voice steady. Grace raised an eyebrow. “Excuse me?” “I’m not leaving,” Sarah repeated. “You can threaten me all you want, but I’m not going anywhere. I’m going to fight back, and I’m going to make sure you, Michael, and Elena pay for what you’ve done.” Grace’s lips twisted into a cruel smile. “You think you can fight us? You’re just a lost little girl, Sarah. You’re nothing.” Sarah’s heart pounded, but she refused to back down. “We’ll see about that.” Without another word, Sarah turned on her heel and walked out of the mansion, her head held high. “You did what?” David’s voice was filled with shock as Sarah sat in his office later that day. “I confronted her,” Sarah said, her voice shaky but determined. “I told her I was not leaving. I’m not backing down.” David leaned back in his chair, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. “That’s... brave. But also dangerous. You know they’ll come after you now, right?” “I don’t care,” Sarah said, her voice firm. “I’m done being scared. I’m done letting them control my life.” David nodded, a hint of admiration in his eyes. “So, what’s the plan?” Sarah took a deep breath. “We took them down. Michael, Elena, Grace, everyone involved. We expose them for who they are.” David smiled slightly. “Now you’re talking.” Sarah looked at him, her eyes filled with determination. “But how? How do we do this?” David opened a file on his desk. “I’ve been gathering evidence. Michael’s embezzlement, Elena’s blackmail, and Grace’s involvement in signing away her inheritance. We have enough to build a strong case.” Sarah frowned. “But will it be enough? They have so much power, so many connections.” David leaned forward, his expression serious. “That’s why we don’t just take this to the authorities. We take it to the media. Public opinion can be a powerful weapon.” “The media?” Sarah’s voice wavered. “Won’t that hurt a lot of people? The company, the employees... don’t deserve to be caught in the crossfire.” David nodded slowly. “I understand your concern, but think about all the people who’ve already been hurt by Michael and Elena’s schemes. If we don’t stop them, more people will suffer.” Sarah bit her lip, thinking hard. “But what if it backfires? What if they spin the story and make me look like the villain?” David gave her a reassuring smile. “I won’t let that happen. We’ll do this carefully. We’ll control the narrative.” Sarah sighed, her mind racing. “I just... I don’t want to hurt anyone innocent.” David nodded again. “I know. But sometimes, you have to take risks to bring down people like them. They’ve hurt too many people already. This is about justice.” Sarah sat quietly for a moment, weighing her options. She had spent so long being afraid, being manipulated. But now, she had a choice. She could take control of her life. She could fight back. Finally, she looked up at David, her eyes filled with determination. “Okay. Let’s do it. Let’s go public.” David smiled. “That’s what I wanted to hear.” He reached into his desk and pulled out a draft of a press release. “I’ve already started working on this. We’ll release it to the media, and once it’s out there, there’ll be no turning back.” Sarah took the paper and skimmed it. Her hands were still shaking, but her mind was clear. She knew this was the right thing to do. It was the only way to stop Michael and Elena from ruining more lives. David watched her carefully. “Are you ready for this, Sarah?” She looked up at him, her voice steady. “I’m ready.” David nodded, satisfied. “Good. We’ll finalize this tonight and send it out tomorrow. By this time next week, the whole city will know who they are.” Sarah’s heart raced. Tomorrow, everything will change. But for the first time in a long time, she wasn’t afraid. She was ready to fight.
