Serena didn't sleep that night.
She sat in her penthouse, staring at the city lights, replaying Elias's words over and over in her head.
"I love you, Serena. I've always loved you."
Her chest ached with a pain she thought she'd buried five years ago. She'd spent so long building walls around her heart, convincing herself she was immune to him. But one dinner. One confession. And the walls were already cracking.
She hated him for that.
She hated herself for still caring.
Her phone buzzed. She glanced at it and saw Maya's name flash across the screen.
"Serena, I know it's late, but we have a problem."
Serena sat up straighter. "What kind of problem?"
"Victoria is holding a press conference tomorrow. She's going to announce that she's rejoining Ashcroft Global as a senior partner."
Serena's blood ran cold. "She can't do that. She's not on the board."
"She's claiming Elias invited her back. And she's going to paint you as the villain who's trying to steal the company from its rightful owners."
Serena stood and began pacing. "Elias wouldn't—"
"Are you sure about that?"
Serena paused. Was she sure? Elias had confessed his feelings, but that didn't mean he wouldn't betray her again. He'd done it before. He could do it again.
"No," she admitted quietly. "I'm not sure of anything."
Maya sighed. "What do you want to do?"
Serena's mind raced. If Victoria went public with her claims, the board would turn against her. The media would destroy her reputation. Everything she'd built would crumble.
She had to act first.
"Get me Victoria's financial records. The ones I asked for."
"Already have them."
"Forward them to the board. Anonymous. And let the press get wind of it too."
Maya paused. "Serena, if we do this—"
"Then do it." Serena's voice was ice. "She started this war. I'm going to finish it."
The next morning, Serena arrived at Ashcroft Global early.
The building was buzzing with nervous energy. Employees whispered in clusters, their eyes darting toward her as she walked past.
She knew what they were saying. They were waiting for the press conference. They were waiting to see if Victoria would destroy her.
She walked into the executive conference room and found Elias already there.
He looked up when she entered. "Serena."
"Don't." She held up her hand. "I need to know if you invited Victoria back."
Elias frowned. "What? No. I would never—"
"Then why is she holding a press conference claiming you did?"
Elias's face paled. "She's lying. I haven't spoken to her since the gala. I told her I was done with her."
Serena studied his face. He looked genuinely shocked. But she couldn't trust him. She couldn't trust anyone.
"Then let's see what happens at the press conference," she said coldly. "And let's hope you're telling the truth."
The press conference was scheduled for 11 AM.
Serena watched from the back of the room as Victoria stepped up to the podium, her smile bright and predatory.
"Good morning, everyone. Thank you for coming."
Cameras flashed. Reporters leaned forward.
Victoria clasped her hands together, radiating false humility. "As you know, I've had a long and successful partnership with Ashcroft Global. And today, I'm thrilled to announce that I'm returning to the company as a senior partner."
Serena's jaw tightened. She glanced at Elias, who was standing near the stage, looking furious.
"The current leadership is weak," Victoria continued. "There's been a shift in power that threatens the very foundations of this company. But I'm here to restore balance. To bring back the vision that made Ashcroft Global great."
She paused, her eyes scanning the room. "And to expose the truth about the woman who's been trying to destroy this company from the inside."
Serena's heart pounded.
Victoria's smile widened. "Serena Hale—"
A reporter's phone buzzed. Then another. Then another.
Whispers spread through the crowd like wildfire.
Victoria faltered. "What's going on?"
One of the reporters stood. "Victoria, we just received documents showing you've been funneling money to a shell company in the Cayman Islands. Twenty million dollars over the past three years."
Victoria's face went white. "That's, that's not true."
Another reporter stood. "The documents also show you were involved in hiding assets during the merger negotiations. Is that correct?"
"Lies!" Victoria's voice was shrill. "These are lies!"
A third reporter stood. "Victoria, if these allegations are true, were you the one who orchestrated the corporate scandal that led to Ashcroft Global's collapse?"
The room erupted.
Victoria stumbled back from the podium. Her carefully crafted smile had shattered. She looked terrified. Cornered.
Serena stepped forward.
"Let's be clear," she said, her voice cutting through the chaos. "Victoria Ashcroft is not returning to this company. She's been removed from all future involvement. And if these allegations are proven true, she will face legal consequences."
Victoria turned to face her, rage burning in her eyes. "You did this."
Serena met her gaze evenly. "I protected my company."
"This isn't over," Victoria hissed. "You'll regret this."
"I don't regret anything." Serena's voice was cold. "Especially not protecting the empire I built."
Later that afternoon, Serena found Elias in his office.
He was staring out the window, his back to her. The tension in his shoulders told her everything.
"She's gone," he said quietly. "I just got word. She's left the city."
"Good."
He turned to face her. "You knew about the shell company."
"I suspected. I confirmed."
"You could have exposed her earlier. You waited."
Serena's smile was sharp. "I wanted to watch her fall."
Elias studied her for a long moment. There was something new in his eyes. Respect. Maybe even admiration.
"You're dangerous," he said softly.
"I learned from the best."
He stepped closer. "Serena, I—"
"Don't." She held up her hand. "I didn't do this for you. I did it for myself. For my company. Victoria was a threat, and I eliminated her. That's all."
"I know." His voice was gentle. "But I'm grateful anyway."
Serena's heart stuttered. She looked away.
"Just do me a favor," she said quietly. "Don't make me regret trusting you. Because I'm giving you one more chance, Elias. One more chance to prove you're not the man who threw me away."
Elias's eyes widened. "I won't."
"I hope not. Because if you break my trust again, I won't just walk away. I'll destroy you. And I won't lose a single night of sleep over it."
She turned and walked out of the office.
Her heart was racing. Her hands were trembling.
But for the first time in five years, she felt something she hadn't felt in a long time.
Hope.
