The meeting was a trap disguised as diplomacy. Alicia knew it the moment she stepped into the private room, heavy curtains drawn, guards stationed just a little too close. The rival family sat across from her, smiles sharp, eyes calculating. They weren’t here to negotiate. They were here to test her.
One of them leaned forward. “We hear your inner circle has… changed.”
Alicia didn’t react. She lifted her glass slowly, unbothered. “Power adapts,” she said. “It survives that way.”
Their gaze flicked—briefly—toward him standing behind her. The message was clear. Choose wrong, and she’d lose more than influence.
Alicia set the glass down. “Let me be clear,” she continued, voice calm but cold. “Anyone under my protection is untouchable. Question that again, and this conversation ends permanently.”
The room went still. This wasn’t a threat. It was a declaration.
Later, when they were alone, he spoke quietly. “You didn’t have to do that.”
Alicia met his eyes. “I did.” She paused. “Not because I owe you. Because I chose you.”
Something shifted then—subtle but undeniable. Trust settled between them, heavier than fear.
That night, Alicia stood at her window, the city glowing beneath her rule. Loyalty had been proven, not demanded. And for the first time, she allowed herself to imagine a future where power didn’t mean standing alone.
Whatever was coming next, they would face it together.
