EYES THAT NOTICE

254 Words
The mafia world was built on observation. Nothing stayed hidden for long—not alliances, not betrayals, and certainly not shifts in power. Alicia knew this, yet she couldn’t ignore the subtle glances following her lately. People were watching her more closely, measuring the change in her demeanor, the way she no longer stood entirely alone. At a private meeting with several families, she sat at the head of the table, calm and commanding as always. He stood at her side, not as a guard, not as a subordinate, but as an equal. The room noticed. Conversations paused for a fraction of a second, eyes flickering between them. Respect was still there—but now curiosity and suspicion joined it. Alicia met every stare without flinching. She had built her reputation on control, and she wasn’t about to let anyone think she had softened. Still, when their hands brushed beneath the table, the brief contact grounded her. It reminded her that she wasn’t facing this world alone anymore. Later, as they walked through the marble corridors, she caught whispers trailing behind them. “They’re close.” “He’s dangerous.” “She’s changing.” Alicia didn’t slow her steps. Change wasn’t weakness; it was evolution. And if the city was watching, she would give them something to fear. He glanced at her, a faint knowing look in his eyes. Alicia lifted her chin, confidence unshaken. Whatever silence existed between them, the world was starting to hear it—and it was louder than ever.
