She remembered a particular day they had spent at the park, a memory etched in her mind for both its sweetness and bitterness. It was the cusp of Valentine’s Day, and the air was filled with the scent of blooming flowers and the faint chatter of couples scattered across the park. Jude, ever the charmer, had planned to make the day special for Juli. He had brought along chocolates and a vibrant bouquet of roses, his boyish grin enough to melt any heart. Juli couldn’t deny that Jude possessed an irresistible charm—his broad shoulders, confident stride, and disarming smile made him the center of attention wherever he went. It wasn’t unusual for girls to gravitate toward him, and though she was proud to be the one who held his heart, she couldn’t suppress the occasional pang of jealousy. She often felt a twinge of insecurity when Jude mingled effortlessly with his female friends, his natural charisma lighting up every interaction. That day, they had chosen a secluded spot under the shade of a grand neem tree. The sun filtered through its leaves, casting playful shadows on the ground. A gentle breeze ruffled their hair as they leaned against the sturdy trunk, enjoying the serenity of the moment. Jude, in his usual playful manner, reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, foil-wrapped piece of chocolate. With a mischievous glint in his eyes, he unwrapped it and held it out to her. "Here," he said, leaning closer. "For my favorite girl." Juli smiled shyly, her hand reaching out to accept the offering. But just as her fingers brushed against the chocolate, Jude pulled it back and popped it into his own mouth with a cheeky grin. "Jude!" she exclaimed, half-annoyed and half-amused. To placate her mock indignation, he quickly presented her with the roses, their vibrant red petals a stark contrast against the green backdrop of the park. Juli’s irritation melted as she accepted the bouquet, inhaling its sweet fragrance. She was just beginning to feel cherished again when Jude’s attention suddenly shifted. Out of the corner of his eye, he had spotted someone familiar. Without a word to Juli, he jumped to his feet, clutching the roses, and dashed off toward the figure in the distance. Juli sat there, stunned and confused, the warmth of the moment evaporating in an instant. She squinted to get a better look and saw Jude greeting a tall, elegant woman with shoulder-length hair and a confident demeanor. The roses, which had been meant for Juli, were now being presented to this stranger. Juli’s heart clenched as she watched him interact with the woman, his enthusiasm and familiarity unmistakable. “Celia!” Jude’s voice carried over to where Juli sat. “Where have you been all these years?” Celia laughed, her voice warm and melodic. “Jude! I could ask you the same. I thought you had disappeared off the face of the earth.” Juli rose to her feet, her face flushed with anger and embarrassment. She clenched her fists as she watched the scene unfold. It wasn’t just the act of Jude giving away the roses; it was the ease with which he seemed to forget her presence. She could feel the sting of betrayal, even if it was unintentional. As she approached them, Jude finally noticed her. His carefree smile faltered as he saw the storm brewing in her eyes. “Juli,” he began, his tone placating, “this is Celia, an old friend from school. We haven’t seen each other in years.” Juli forced a smile, but her voice betrayed her simmering frustration. “Nice to meet you, Celia. I hope Jude has been treating you as well as he treats me.” Celia, oblivious to the tension, laughed and replied, “Oh, Jude’s always been a sweetheart. You’re lucky to have him.” Juli bit her tongue, unwilling to make a scene. But inside, a whirlwind of emotions raged—jealousy, hurt, and a sense of inadequacy she couldn’t shake. As Jude continued chatting with Celia, Juli quietly stepped away, finding solace back under the neem tree. She sat down, clutching the now slightly crumpled bouquet of roses. Tears pricked at her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. That day, Juli learned something important about herself. She loved Jude, but his carefree nature sometimes made her feel invisible. It wasn’t the roses or the chocolate she cared about—it was the reassurance that she was his priority. And in that moment, sitting alone beneath the neem tree, she wasn’t sure she had that assurance. The memory of that peculiar park encounter still played vividly in Juli’s mind, stirring a whirlwind of emotions. She recalled the moment Celia entered the scene like a bolt out of the blue, with her striking presence and auras that demanded attention. Celia’s confident posture, the deliberate tilt of her head, and her piercing gaze spoke volumes. She was dressed in a mini skirt paired with a snug-fitting top that accentuated her curves—a sight that made Juli feel both out of place and strangely inadequate. Celia had removed her Russian goggles with a flourish, narrowing her eyes to scrutinize Jude's face before snapping her fingers in realization. “Oh Jude, it’s you?” she exclaimed, her voice a blend of surprise and delight. Jude's face lit up like a child discovering a hidden treasure. He embraced her with unabashed enthusiasm, pressing a kiss to her forehead while still holding the roses that Juli thought had been meant for her. Without a second thought, he handed the bouquet to Celia. The gesture stung Juli more than she had anticipated, but she remained quiet, her lips pressing into a thin line. “It’s been forever since we last met!” Jude exclaimed, his voice tinged with excitement. “I was scared you might not recognize me, but it seems your memory is as sharp as ever.” Celia accepted the roses with a dazzling smile, her eyes sparkling with surprise and something that Juli couldn’t quite place. “Thank you,” she murmured, her voice soft but guarded. She studied Jude for a moment, and though her smile remained, there was an undercurrent of skepticism. “But Jude, who’s that girl over there?” she asked, tilting her head toward Juli, who stood frozen a few feet away, her expression unreadable. “Oh, that’s Juli,” Jude replied, gesturing for Juli to join them. “She’s a… friend of mine.” Juli hesitated, feeling a surge of vulnerability and frustration. Jude’s casual tone, paired with his failure to acknowledge their deeper relationship, gnawed at her. When he waved her over a second time, she forced herself to approach them. As she walked, Juli tried to bury her feelings beneath a facade of politeness. “Hi, I’m Juli,” she said, extending her hand with a faint smile. “Jude’s best friend.” Celia shook her hand firmly, her lips curving into a smirk that seemed more mocking than warm. “Nice to meet you, Juli. I’m Celia, Jude’s favorite childhood friend.” The words hung in the air, heavy with implication. Juli’s smile faltered slightly, but she quickly recovered, masking her discomfort. “That’s wonderful,” she said, her tone as cordial as she could manage. “I didn’t know Jude had a childhood friend like you.” “Oh, there’s a lot about Jude you probably don’t know,” Celia replied breezily. Then, as if testing the waters, she added, “Would you mind if I borrowed Jude for a coffee date? It’s been so long, and we have a lot of catching up to do.” Juli’s stomach churned at the casual audacity of the question. Before she could respond, Jude coughed awkwardly, breaking the tension. “Uh, maybe another time,” he interjected hastily. “We’re running late, and Juli’s parents will be worried.” Celia arched a brow, clearly unimpressed. “So, you’re letting this opportunity go? Fine. I’ll save it for another day,” she said with a playful pout. She waved at them with a flourish, making sure Jude saved her number before she walked away. Juli watched Celia leave, her emotions simmering just beneath the surface. “So,” she began, her voice laced with forced lightness, “why did you cancel? It seemed like you wanted to go.” Jude turned to her, his expression conflicted. “What are you talking about? That wasn’t the right time.” “Your heart says otherwise,” Juli remarked, her voice tinged with bitterness. Jude laughed nervously, brushing off her comment. “You’re imagining things,” he said, but his forced smile betrayed him. The ride home was tense. Juli felt her chest tighten, overwhelmed by a mixture of anger, sadness, and insecurity. She realized she was falling deeper into uncertainty about their relationship. Jude, on the other hand, remained unusually quiet, his gaze fixed on the road ahead. Back at home, Juli tried to shake off her thoughts. She stepped into her room and leaned against the door, letting out a deep sigh. She reached for a towel to dry her still-damp hair, her mind wandering back to the park encounter. Suddenly, her loyal dog, Jerry, bounded into the room, wagging his tail furiously. He nuzzled against her leg, sensing her unease. “Jerry,” she murmured, kneeling to scratch behind his ears, “do you like Jude?” The dog wagged his tail enthusiastically, his innocent eyes full of trust. Juli chuckled softly. “Of course you do. You’re too pure to see flaws.” Jerry barked lightly, then tugged at her gown with his teeth, urging her toward the door. She laughed despite herself. “Okay, okay, I’m coming,” she said, grabbing a comb. “Let me at least fix my hair.” But Jerry was insistent. He barked again, pulling her toward the dining room. Surrendering, Juli followed him, her heart slightly lighter. At least Jerry, with his unconditional love, could bring her a moment of solace amidst the storm brewing in her life.
