Chapter 9 - Under the Moonlight

960 Words
The moon hung high in the sky, casting its silver glow over the dense forest that separated them from the world. Beneath its light, the woods seemed endless and intimate, a world apart from the political intrigue and treacherous expectations that awaited Eva and Kael in their respective kingdoms. It was here, beneath the ancient trees, that they met. Eva stood waiting, her breath a soft mist in the cold air, the fabric of her dark gown rustling as she shifted from foot to foot. She had learned to be still in moments like this, to remain poised even in the face of what she knew to be reckless. The danger of these meetings gnawed at her, but the pull between them—between Kael and herself—was impossible to deny. She had never felt such a consuming desire that swirled between longing and defiance, a cocktail of emotions so potent that it nearly intoxicated her. When Kael emerged from the shadows, his presence filled the air like the growl of distant thunder, the scent of pine and earth lingering in the wake of his steps. His dark and smouldering eyes locked with hers, as if the mere sight of her was enough to awaken the beast within him. He stepped closer, his movements fluid and predatory, but it was the way he looked at her that sent a jolt through her chest. “I didn’t think you’d come,” Kael murmured, his voice a low rasp, rough with desire but laced with something darker. Something dangerous. Eva’s pulse quickened, her heart hammering beneath the tight lace of her bodice. She knew what he meant—this was madness, this was reckless, and they both knew the consequences. Yet, when he was near, all rational thought fled her mind, leaving only the raw hunger that burned between them. “You didn’t think I’d come?” she repeated, her lips curling into a faint smile. She took a slow step forward, her body reacting to the pull between them, as if the moon itself had commanded it. “Did you think I’d let you disappear into the night again without so much as a second glance?” Kael smirked, his sharp canines gleaming in the moonlight. “I’m not sure if you’re brave or foolish, Eva.” “Perhaps a bit of both,” she replied, her voice thick with the tension they both felt. She reached out, her fingers brushing the edge of his cloak, the touch igniting something inside her. “But you never answered my question, Kael. Did you think I’d let you walk away?” He didn’t answer with words. Instead, his hands shot out, grabbing her by the waist and pulling her against him, his lips crashing against hers in a kiss so fierce it nearly stole her breath away. Eva gasped, but there was no hesitation in her response. She kissed him back with equal fervour, her fingers tangling in his hair, pulling him deeper into her. The tension between them, the need, was unbearable. She could feel his heartbeat against hers, fast and erratic, as if they were both drowning in the same need for each other. In the heat of the moment, nothing else existed. Not the war between their families, not the blood that separated them, not the years of hatred and betrayal that had shaped their worlds. All that mattered was the fierce pull between them, the way their bodies seemed to know exactly how to move together, as if they had always been made for this. For this. But reality was never far behind. Kael pulled back suddenly, his chest heaving with ragged breaths. His eyes, dark and intense, searched her face, as if looking for something—something he didn’t quite understand. “This is madness,” he muttered, his voice hoarse. “You know what we’re doing. What this means.” Eva met his gaze, unflinching. Her heart was racing, her skin burning with the heat of their kiss, but she didn’t look away. “I know exactly what we’re doing,” she said, her voice steady, even as her body betrayed her. “I know the risks. But I don’t care.” He released a breath, like a growl, the tension in him palpable. “You should care, Eva. This—what we’re doing—it won’t end well. If anyone finds out…” “We’ll make sure they don’t,” she interrupted, her words as sharp as the fangs she barely kept in check. “I don’t care about the rules. Not anymore.” Kael’s eyes flickered, a mix of surprise and something else. Something vulnerable. He took a step back, the moonlight casting long shadows across his face. “And what if they do find out? What if your family—what if mine—what if they come for us? For you?” She stepped closer to him again, her breath mingling with his. “Then let them come.” Her words were a challenge, a dare. A promise. Kael’s lips twitched into a half-smile, one that was almost bitter, but still full of longing. “You’re dangerous, Eva.” “So are you,” she whispered, her hand sliding up to rest against his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath her fingers. “But I think we make each other more so.” For a long moment, they simply stood there, the heat of their bodies mixing with the cold night air, both of them caught between the fierce, overwhelming desire for each other and the knowledge that they were playing a dangerous game. A game that could destroy them both. But in that moment, neither of them cared.
