CHAPTER 4 Lynette's POV "Hey Lynette", how are you doing? Ray asked in a low tone. What is it? My questioning voice broke the silence. "Is there something you want to confront me about"? Do you wish to knock me once more?"I said as I could feel my heart boiling in anger. " No, Lynette," he said softly. I got pissed at his response. "Look Ray"! if you have nothing to say about the divorce I suggest you end the call right now! Or I do…….. Wait! Lynette, where are you? Ray asked. It's none of your concern, Ray, I interjected. Are you prepared to sign the documents I requested? I could feel my bitterness seep through my words; I didn't wish to engage in conversation with him. My dear, please listen to my plea, Ray continued. I apologize for my actions; we can resolve this, just come home. Ray pleaded desperately. Enough! I have no intention of returning, you need to move on, as I have already done. With that, I ended the call quickly. I walked towards my mother, planting a kiss on her cheek. She was gently trimming the flowers, the environment was so calm in the early morning hours. "Good morning", Mom, I greeted. As I hugged her from behind, releasing my weight to her shoulders " I suggest you should hit the gym Mom," I teased as I pecked her again. She shook her head disapprovingly. " Not again", Mom scolded, pulling my hands off her shoulder. Where did you go, dear? she asked as she grabbed the bag I had brought, her excitement increased quickly. "Wow!" she exclaimed, pulling out a dress from the bag. Lynette! Mom exclaimed again. What's happening? Did my daughter win the lottery? She yelled as he constantly gave me a surprising look. I met an old friend at the club, I said. I lied to her, claiming to have met a friend who gave me these gifts. Do they suit me? I asked. "Yes, they are lovely", Mom replied as she rested her tired legs, sinking into her armchair. I couldn't bring myself to confess that I slept with a stranger. Is your leg aching? I asked, knowing Mom needed to take her medication. "Yes", it is, and this will be my last dose, she responded slowly, avoiding my gaze. "That's alright", I'll call the pharmacist to refill your prescription with a supply that will last. Mom's eyes widened in surprise, struggling to comprehend the details of my statement. "Get to work" Dear, we have a lot to discuss. Mom said. Of course, Mother, I chuckled. I hurried to my room, the sweet aroma of rice wafting through the air. My stomach growled, and I couldn't resist heading to the kitchen and digging into the pot for a few bites. " What a bad habit", Mom said, sneaking up behind me. "Alright", I'm off to work, I turned around slowly, throwing my hands up in the air as I smiled. How does the dress look? I fluffed the edges of my gown. It's beautiful dear. Be careful "I love you so much," Mom said as she approached me and embraced me tenderly. "Oh Mom, you're stirring emotions within me," I confessed. "I must be leaving now," I added as I bid farewell. Walking down the calm street, I hurriedly avoided any interactions with my neighbors. Memories of Ray flooded my mind, but Mom always had a way of distracting my attention. I boarded a bus to my workplace, it was past time for my work. It was my first time moving out after marriage, and I was anxious about the whole affair. Every morning, Ray would dull my mood before I left for work. In no time, I arrived and made my way through the back door, hoping to remain hidden, as I was late. "Hey Lynette," a voice called out from behind. "Late for work again?" I giggled, pretending not to be troubled by my lateness. "I overslept, Jane, and I needed to get some medicine for my mother," I explained as I put my belongings in the locker. "Okay, if you say so," Jane responded amicably. Handing me a task, Jane instructed, "Please be fast, Lynette. The customers have already placed their orders." I took the plain white paper from her hands and began working on it. "Lynette!" Jane called out again. "Why are you at your mother's place? Did Ray go on vacation?" she continued, getting closer and taking a seat next to me. "I filed for a divorce, Jane. But Ray is having a hard time accepting it," I shared, and Jane's expression turned conflicted. "What more does he want from you? To destroy you completely?" she exclaimed. "I'm glad you finally saw things clearly," she added. "Can you come live with me and share the rent?" Jane offered, patting my back. "No, Jane. I'm staying with my mother now. She still needs someone to take care of her," I declined. "It's alright, dear. Just be happy and stay strong," Jane said before hastily making her way to the work ward. Jane has been a friend and a colleague to me. She has a perfect marriage, and even though she never wanted children, she is content. I stood still for a moment, I then made my way to the work ward. The sound of the baking machine filled the air, and I noticed that someone else had already completed my task. The assigned packages were already taken care of by someone else, leaving me with nothing to do but to observe from a distance. I couldn't help but wonder who had completed my task for me. Was it possibly Raymond? The thought filled me with dread, as it wouldn't be fair if he took credit for my work. I could even face suspension. Gathering my courage, I made my way to his office, trying to remain inconspicuous as I slouched in the chair across from him. "Good morning, Raymond," I greeted him. "Good morning, Lynette," he responded, listening attentively to my words. "My task...it's already been completed," I stammered, nervous about his reaction. "Yes, because I took care of it," he admitted, an air of superiority in his tone. Feeling defeated, I hung my head in shame. But then, to my surprise, he handed me an envelope. "I'm so sorry, Raymond. Something came up," I faltered, trying to come up with an excuse. "That's always your excuse," he scolded, his disappointment evident. "We'll have to suspend you, but you can come back next week." As I left his office, a mix of emotions washed over me. I was relieved to not be suspended but also disappointed that my work had already been done. Quickly gathering my belongings , I made my way to the exit. But just as I was about to leave, my phone buzzed with a message from Dante.
