A Thread of the Devil
Chapter 1: The Final Thread
People say the Devil steals souls.
They're wrong.
The Devil saves them.
For thousands of years, Lucifer had ruled the Underworld—not as a cruel tyrant, but as a lonely king burdened with protecting humanity from creatures far more terrifying than himself. Feared by Heaven, hated by Earth, and betrayed by Hell, he had become the monster everyone believed him to be.
But every legend has a lie hidden inside it.
And every monster has a story.
Lucifer knew this better than anyone.
He had stopped counting the centuries long ago. Time meant nothing in Hell, where darkness stretched endlessly beneath a blood-red sky. From his black throne, Lucifer watched the souls that arrived at his gates. Some were cruel. Some were innocent. Some had simply been forgotten by the living world.
And every night, Lucifer wondered how long he could continue protecting them.
Because something was coming.
Something older than Heaven.
Older than Hell.
Older even than Lucifer himself.
The ancient prophecy called it The Thread.
A force capable of connecting every living soul in existence.
If awakened, it could tear apart the boundary between Heaven, Hell, and Earth.
Lucifer had spent centuries keeping it buried.
Until Serena found it.
---
Serena had never believed in the Devil.
She believed in university exams, late-night coffee, annoying roommates, and the strange feeling that sometimes followed her whenever she walked home alone.
She never believed in demons.
Not until the night she inherited the old mansion.
The house belonged to her grandmother, a woman Serena barely remembered. It stood at the edge of Blackwood Forest, surrounded by dead trees and endless fog.
Serena had planned to sell it.
She changed her mind the moment she stepped through the front door.
Something was waiting for her.
The mansion was silent.
Too silent.
Then she heard it.
A whisper.
"Serena."
She froze.
Her heart began beating faster.
"Hello?"
No answer.
She walked deeper into the house, following the sound until she reached an old wooden door.
The door was locked.
But when Serena touched the handle, it opened.
Inside was a small room covered in strange symbols.
And in the center sat a wooden box.
Wrapped around the box was a single crimson thread.
Serena stared at it.
She should have walked away.
Instead, she reached for it.
The moment her fingers touched the thread, every candle in the room went out.
A voice whispered behind her.
"You shouldn't have come."
Serena turned.
Nothing.
Then the thread moved.
It crawled across her hand like a living creature.
Serena screamed and tried to pull away.
The thread tightened.
Pain shot through her fingers.
And somewhere, very far away, something opened its eyes.
---
Lucifer felt the moment the seal broke.
He stood on the balcony of his palace, staring across the endless darkness of Hell.
For the first time in centuries, fear touched his heart.
"The Thread," he whispered.
A demon appeared behind him.
"My Lord?"
Lucifer turned.
His expression was colder than death.
"She has awakened it."
"Who?"
Lucifer looked toward the distant boundary separating Hell from Earth.
For one brief moment, he saw her.
A young woman standing inside an old mansion.
Serena.
The girl who had unknowingly awakened the one thing Lucifer had spent centuries protecting.
The demon waited.
Lucifer spoke quietly.
"Find her."
"And if she refuses to come?"
Lucifer's eyes darkened.
"Then protect her."
The demon hesitated.
"From whom?"
Lucifer looked toward the heavens.
"Everyone."
---
Serena's life changed that night.
She began seeing things.
Shadowy figures standing outside her window.
Faces appearing in mirrors.
Dark hands reaching from beneath her bed.
And every night, she heard the same whisper.
"Give us the girl."
She told herself she was dreaming.
Until the first demon attacked.
Serena was walking home from the university when the streetlights suddenly went out.
One by one.
Darkness swallowed the road.
She stopped.
Something moved behind her.
Serena ran.
She didn't look back.
But she could hear it.
The creature was chasing her.
Its footsteps were wrong.
Too fast.
Too heavy.
Serena reached the end of the street and turned.
The creature stood beneath a streetlight.
It looked almost human.
Almost.
Its mouth opened far too wide.
Serena screamed.
Then the air changed.
A black mist appeared between them.
A man stepped out of the darkness.
Tall.
Beautiful.
Terrifying.
He wore a black coat, and his eyes seemed to hold something ancient.
The creature immediately fell to its knees.
"Lucifer."
Serena stared at him.
The stranger looked at her.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Lucifer turned toward the demon.
"Touch her again," he said calmly, "and I'll erase you from existence."
The demon disappeared.
Serena stood frozen.
Lucifer looked at her.
"Are you hurt?"
She shook her head.
"Who are you?"
Lucifer's expression became unreadable.
"You already know."
Serena stepped back.
"No. I don't."
He moved closer.
The air around him seemed to grow colder.
"My name is Lucifer."
Serena's blood ran cold.
She laughed nervously.
"That's not funny."
"I wasn't joking."
Her heart stopped.
She stared into his eyes.
The Devil.
Standing in front of her.
Real.
Lucifer watched fear spread across her face.
He had seen that expression thousands of times.
But something about Serena's fear disturbed him.
He didn't want her to fear him.
He didn't understand why.
"You need to leave this place," Lucifer said.
"Why?"
"Because the thing you awakened is coming for you."
Serena swallowed.
"What thing?"
Lucifer looked at her hand.
The crimson thread was there.
Wrapped around her wrist.
His expression changed.
For the first time, Serena saw something in his eyes.
Fear.
"The Devil's Thread."
---
Lucifer took Serena to his world.
She expected fire.
Torture.
Monsters.
Instead, she found a kingdom.
A dark, beautiful kingdom filled with enormous black towers, silver rivers, and gardens of flowers that glowed beneath the moon.
Serena stared.
"This is Hell?"
Lucifer stood beside her.
"Not everything you were taught is true."
She looked at him.
"Then what else is a lie?"
Lucifer said nothing.
That was when Serena realized something.
Lucifer was lonely.
Despite his power, despite his kingdom, despite all the demons who obeyed him, he seemed completely alone.
She began noticing small things.
The way he stood outside her door every night.
The way he secretly ordered demons to protect her.
The way he disappeared whenever she asked about his past.
And slowly, against her better judgment, Serena began falling in love with him.
Lucifer noticed.
It terrified him.
Because he had once loved someone.
And Heaven had taken her from him.
Lucifer had never allowed himself to love again.
Until Serena.
One night, Serena found him standing alone beneath the black moon.
"Why do you protect me?" she asked.
Lucifer didn't turn.
"Because you're in danger."
"That's not the real reason."
Silence.
Serena stepped closer.
"Tell me the truth."
Lucifer finally looked at her.
His eyes were filled with centuries of pain.
"Because I love you."
Serena stopped breathing.
Lucifer looked away.
"You shouldn't love me."
"Why?"
"Because everyone I love dies."
Serena reached for his hand.
Lucifer froze.
She held it anyway.
"Then don't let me die."
For the first time in centuries, the Devil smiled.
It was barely visible.
But Serena saw it.
And then the crimson thread around her wrist began glowing.
Lucifer's smile disappeared.
"No."
Serena looked down.
"What?"
Lucifer grabbed her wrist.
The thread had begun moving.
Another thread appeared.
Then another.
They wrapped around Serena's arm before stretching toward Lucifer.
Their souls were connecting.
Lucifer stepped back.
"No, Serena."
"What is happening?"
Lucifer's voice was filled with terror.
"The prophecy."
"What prophecy?"
He looked at her.
"The final thread has begun."
Suddenly, the sky above Hell split open.
A blinding light poured through the darkness.
Angels descended.
Thousands of them.
At their head stood the most powerful being in Heaven.
The one who had betrayed Lucifer centuries ago.
Lucifer looked up.
His eyes turned black.
Serena stepped beside him.
"Who is that?"
Lucifer's voice was cold.
"My brother."
The angel raised his sword.
"Lucifer."
Lucifer stared at him.
"You've come for Serena."
"No," the angel replied.
"We've come for you."
Lucifer stepped in front of Serena.
The angel smiled.
"You still don't understand, do you?"
Lucifer's eyes narrowed.
"The girl isn't your salvation."
The crimson threads tightened around Serena and Lucifer.
The angel continued.
"She is your destruction."
Lucifer's expression changed.
Serena looked at him.
"Lucifer?"
He turned toward her.
For the first time, Serena saw genuine fear in his eyes.
The angel raised his sword.
"Kill her, Lucifer."
Serena froze.
Lucifer didn't move.
The angel's voice echoed through the kingdom.
"Kill the girl you love, and the Thread will be broken."
Lucifer looked at Serena.
Then at the army of Heaven.
His hand slowly closed into a fist.
Serena whispered his name.
"Lucifer..."
He stepped toward her.
The Devil's kingdom trembled.
Then Lucifer pulled Serena into his arms.
He held her tightly.
And when he spoke, his voice was cold enough to silence Heaven itself.
"If loving her makes me the Devil..."
Lucifer looked toward his brother.
"...then I will become the Devil you fear."
His wings erupted behind him.
Black.
Massive.
Beautiful.
Terrifying.
Lucifer lifted his sword.
The armies of Heaven descended.
And Serena finally understood the truth.
She hadn't fallen in love with the Devil.
She had fallen in love with the man who had been forced to become one.
And now, for the first time in eternity...
Lucifer was ready to fight Heaven for her.
