Chapter 16

Clarissa sat hunched over her desk, her chest tight with dread. She knew exactly what awaited her in David's office. This had to be the end of everything. "Have you been called to William's office yet?" Maya appeared beside her desk, sympathy etched across her face, carrying two steaming cups of coffee. Clarissa looked up and nodded weakly. Maya settled into the empty chair beside her, placing the coffee in front of Clarissa. "I heard from several people about the presentation. That brutal, wasn't it?" "I'm completely destroyed, Maya. They all stared at me like I was some pathetic joke." Maya reached for Clarissa's hand. "Clar, everyone makes mistakes. Especially under that kind of pressure. Board presentations are hell, even for people with years of experience." "But this wasn't just any mistake, Maya." Clarissa shook her head. "And now William is definitely going to—" "Fire you?" Maya interrupted. "Not necessarily." "What do you mean, not necessarily? You've seen how William treats me." Maya fell silent for a moment, as if weighing something important. "Clar, I want to tell you something," Maya said quietly. "About six months ago, I nearly got fired for a mistake much worse than what you made today." Clarissa's eyes widened. "What kind of mistake?" "I accidentally sent confidential data to a competitor. Absolutely catastrophic. The company lost hundreds of millions. And you know what? I was called into William's office, certain I'd be fired on the spot." "And then?" Clarissa asked, intrigued. "Then William did something unexpected," Maya continued. "He didn't rage. He didn't shout. He simply said, 'Maya, explain to me what went wrong.' And I was honest. I admitted my mistake, explained how it happened, and most importantly, I showed genuine remorse and determination to make it right." Clarissa studied Maya intently, trying to understand where this was leading. William capable of that? "And what shocked me most was that William actually helped me. He personally intervened to resolve the crisis, gave me a second chance, even provided additional training to prevent similar mistakes. Not only that, but for the following months, he monitored my progress closely—not in an intimidating way, but more like... mentoring." "Seriously?" "Seriously," Maya met Clarissa's gaze earnestly. "William is incredibly demanding. He expects perfection and has no tolerance for excuses. But he's also fair. If you're honest with him, admit your mistakes, and show real determination to improve, he'll give you another chance." Clarissa still looked uncertain. "But here's the thing," Maya leaned closer. "Maybe he's trying to... shape you." "Shape me?" Clarissa looked confused. "What do you mean?" "Think about it. All those impossible tasks he's given you—somehow, you always manage to complete them. At least you try and learn from them. Maybe William pushes you to your limits because he sees potential in you." "Maya, that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard," Clarissa shook her head firmly. "Is it, though?" Maya smiled faintly. Clarissa fell silent, absorbing Maya's words. A small part of her wanted to believe it, but the larger part remained skeptical. Maya looked at Clarissa meaningfully. "Listen, Clar," Maya grasped both of Clarissa's hands. "I don't know William's reasons. But I know this: you're stronger than you think. You've survived everything he's thrown at you so far. And believe me, if William really wanted to destroy you, he would have fired you on day one." "But—" "Consider today's presentation a lesson. A painful lesson, but still a lesson. And if you walk into that office with the right attitude, with genuine honesty and determination to improve yourself, I'm confident William will give you another chance." Clarissa looked at Maya hopefully. "You really believe that?" "I believe it," Maya nodded with conviction. "William isn't that cruel. He's demanding, he's tough, but he's also fair." "William has never been gentle with anyone. But that's what makes him effective. He pushes people beyond their comfort zones, and the results he achieves from his team are always extraordinary." Clarissa began to regain some confidence. "You have to face this head-on," Maya said firmly. "You don't run. You don't give up. You walk into that office with your head high, admit your mistakes, and show him you're not the same person who made that error. Show him you're willing to learn, willing to grow, and willing to fight for your place here." "And if he still fires me?" "At least you'll leave with your dignity intact," Maya smiled reassuringly. "But I have a feeling he won't. I have a feeling this is just the beginning of something bigger." Clarissa looked at Maya with deep gratitude. "If William wants to destroy me, he'll have to work harder. I won't let this end easily." Maya embraced Clarissa tightly—a warm, supportive hug. "Now that's the spirit. Show him what you're made of." "Maya," Clarissa said, returning the embrace. "Thank you. For everything." "That's what friends are for," Maya released the hug and looked at Clarissa with bright eyes. "Now, fix your makeup, straighten your blazer, and walk into that office like the strong woman you are." Clarissa rose from her chair. She walked to the restroom to fix her appearance, studying her reflection in the mirror with different eyes. Fear was still there, but now there was also growing determination. "Maybe Maya is right. Maybe there's still a part of David in there, buried beneath all that William." She touched up her smudged lipstick, combed her disheveled hair, and smoothed her wrinkled blazer. Her appearance was professional again, but more importantly, her inner strength was returning. When she returned to her desk, Maya was waiting with an encouraging smile. "Ready?" Maya asked. "Ready," Clarissa replied, taking a deep breath. "Remember. Honest. Humble. But not weak. Show him you're someone worth investing in." Clarissa nodded, then walked toward the elevator with more determined steps than she'd taken hours earlier. Each step carried new resolve—determination strengthened by Maya's support and the realization that she wasn't alone in this fight. The elevator rose to the upper floor, then stopped at the executive level. The doors opened, and Clarissa stepped out with her head held high. She paused before David's office door, taking one more deep breath. Her hand rose to knock, but she hesitated for a moment, gathering every ounce of courage she possessed. Clarissa knocked on David's office door, ready to face whatever would come. "Come in," David's voice sounded from within. Clarissa turned the doorknob and stepped inside, prepared for the conversation that might change everything.
