Chapter 2

1241 Words
The palace burned until morning. Smoke covered the sky. The kingdom that had stood for centuries now looked like a grave. Soldiers walked through broken halls carrying torches and bloodied weapons. Victory should have felt glorious. But something felt wrong. Too quiet. A commander stepped through the shattered throne room. His boots crushed broken glass beneath them. He looked around. No king, no queen. A wounded soldier approached. “The Alpha is dead.” The commander nodded once. “And the Luna?” The soldier hesitated. His expression changed. “We searched the royal chambers.” Nothing. “The underground tunnels?” Nothing. “The hidden passages?” Nothing. The commander slowly turned. Smoke drifted through the ruined hall. His eyes darkened. “Search again.” The soldier blinked. “Sir?” The commander stepped closer. “You think this war was for land?” His voice lowered. “We crossed mountains, destroyed kingdoms, Lost thousands.” He looked toward the throne. “We came for the bloodline.” Silence filled the room. Then realization spread across the soldiers. If the Luna escaped The war was unfinished. Outside The courtyard remained silent. At its center lay the body of Alpha Oliver. His silver fur was stained with ash. His eyes were closed. Yet even in death he looked impossible to defeat. No one dared approach first. A young soldier finally stepped forward. His hands trembled. He stared at the fallen king. “Is he really dead?” No one answered. Because none of them had ever imagined seeing this day. Then suddenly A breeze moved across the battlefield. The silver fur shifted. Everyone froze. The commander’s eyes narrowed. But nothing happened. Only silence. He looked away. “Burn the banners.” The kingdom had fallen. Or so they believed. Far beyond the battlefield deep inside the northern forest Luna Natasha woke with a sharp breath. Cold air touched her face. For a moment she forgot. Then she looked down. And remembered, wrapped in cloth a tiny child slept against her chest. Natasha stared. Small fingers. Soft breathing. Alive. Tears filled her eyes. Naomi sat nearby beside a weak fire. “The birth was difficult.” Natasha didn’t answer. She touched her daughter’s cheek. The baby slowly opened her eyes. Silver. Her breath caught. The same silver as Oliver. A broken laugh escaped her. “You look like your father.” Naomi looked away. Neither spoke his name again. After a long silence Naomi asked quietly, “What will you call her?” Natasha looked down. Outside, the wind moved through the trees. Behind them their kingdom burned. Ahead nothing was certain. Then she whispered “Kaelyn.” Naomi repeated it softly. “Kaelyn” Natasha nodded. “She carries the last bloodline.” The old woman became silent. Then she said carefully “If they discover she survived…” Natasha looked toward the distant smoke rising beyond the mountains. Her expression slowly changed. No longer queen. No longer protected. Only a mother remained. “Then they’ll have to come through me.” At that exact moment Kaelyn opened her tiny hand. Silver light flickered across her skin. Then disappeared. Naomi froze. Her eyes widened. Natasha stared. Neither moved. After a long moment Naomi whispered “That should not be possible.” Natasha looked at her. Naomi’s voice trembled. “The Alpha blood awakens much later.” She looked at the sleeping child. Then slowly fear appeared in her eyes. “What was born tonight” She didn’t finish. Outside the wind carried distant war horns. Someone was still searching. Natasha pulled Kaelyn closer. The kingdom believed the bloodline had ended. They could never learn the truth. Because somewhere in her arms the future had already awakened. Three days passed. The fires of Zuru finally died. But the smoke remained; people rebuilt walls. They buried soldiers, and slowly they learned how to live without wolves. The throne room changed first. Silver banners were torn down; new colors replaced them. The old crest of the Alpha Kings disappeared. As though they had never existed. People adapted quickly; they always did. Soon whispers began. “The Last Bloodline is gone.” “The wolves were never protectors.” “The kingdom is safer now.” Children repeated the stories. Adults stopped correcting them, and somewhere along the way history became myth. Far beyond the kingdom deep inside the western forest Naomi sat beside a dying fire. Kaelyn slept in her arms. Small, Quiet. Too quiet. Naomi watched her carefully. The child had barely cried since birth. That should have comforted her. Instead it frightened her. The old woman looked at the ancient book beside her. Its silver cover reflected the moonlight. She remembered the queen’s final words. Do not open it. Naomi looked away. She would obey, no matter what. Behind her soft footsteps moved through the leaves. Naomi stood immediately. Her hand tightened around the book. Silence, nothing moved. Then a voice. “Mother?” Naomi froze. Her breathing stopped; slowly, she turned Queen Natasha stood among the trees. Alive. Wearing the same pale dress. The same gentle smile. Naomi’s eyes filled instantly. “My Queen” She stepped forward and stopped. Something was wrong. The queen stood too still. The wind moved through her. Naomi’s expression changed. “No.” Natasha smiled softly. “You always notice.” Naomi held Kaelyn tighter. Her voice broke. “You didn’t leave.” Natasha looked at her daughter. Her eyes warmed. “I couldn’t.” She took one slow step closer. “I only came to say goodbye properly.” Naomi looked down. Her shoulders shook. Natasha reached forward but her fingers passed through Kaelyn. Her smile trembled. “She’s warm.” Naomi cried quietly. “My Queen…” Natasha looked at her. Then for the first time her expression became serious. “Listen carefully.” The forest became silent. Even the wind seemed to stop. “When Kaelyn turns eighteen” Natasha looked toward the distant mountains. “She will hear the kingdom calling.” Naomi frowned. “What does that mean?” Natasha shook her head. “You’ll know.” Her eyes lowered to the book. “And when she asks for the truth” She paused. “Do not protect her from it.” Naomi stared. Natasha smiled sadly. “She is not meant to survive history.” Her silver eyes lifted. “She is meant to change it.” The air shifted. Her form flickered. Naomi stepped forward. “Wait.” Natasha looked at her one last time. Naomi’s voice trembled. “Were we enough?” The queen became still. Then she smiled. Soft. Certain. “We gave her tomorrow.” Her form began fading. Naomi reached forward. But this time she didn’t try to stop it. Natasha looked at Kaelyn. Her final words were barely a whisper. “Live well, little wolf.” Moonlight swallowed her. And she disappeared. The forest became quiet again. Naomi stood alone. Long after the light was gone Kaelyn suddenly opened her eyes. Silver. Bright. She looked at the empty space where her mother had stood. And smiled. Naomi slowly looked down. The old woman’s breath caught. Because for one brief second, silver light flickered beneath the child’s skin. Then vanished. Naomi closed the book. And held the last bloodline close. Far away in a kingdom that had forgotten wolves a new story had already begun.
