Chapter 4: One Last Night

1501 Words
Christopher’s POV Tuesday evening arrived faster than I expected. I stood in front of the mirror, adjusting the collar of my black leather jacket. Paired with ripped black jeans and a fitted white T-shirt, it was casual enough for a night out while still looking put together. A knock sounded at my door. "Hey, Chris, are you ready?" John called from the hallway. I grabbed my keys and stepped outside. "Yeah. Let's go." As we headed downstairs, I glanced at him. "Who else is coming into town with us?" "Cameron, Brandon, and Derek. They're riding together." I smirked. "You sure you don't want to drive separately? It makes it easier when you inevitably leave with a woman." John looked offended. "I'll have you know I don't plan every night around women." I raised an eyebrow. "Sure." "Okay, maybe most nights." I laughed as we entered the garage. My Range Rover Sport sat waiting near the entrance. The SUV was a recent purchase and still carried that unmistakable new-car smell. It combined luxury and performance perfectly, equally comfortable pulling up to a five-star hotel or navigating rough mountain roads. "Now this," John said as he climbed into the passenger seat, "is a beautiful vehicle." "I know." "Not even trying to be humble, huh?" "Nope." The drive into Whitehorse took roughly thirty minutes. The sun had already set, and the streets were alive with activity. Whitehorse was unique in that humans and werewolves coexisted more closely than in most areas. While the pack lived primarily on the outskirts, many wolves held jobs and businesses throughout town. Tonight, the streets were crowded. Restaurants buzzed with conversation. Music spilled from bars. Cars lined the roads. We eventually arrived at Night Shade, one of the more popular bars in town. After finding a private booth, we ordered drinks and settled in. By my third beer, I noticed someone approaching. A blonde woman. She wore a white tank top and a short pleated skirt, and based on the confidence in her stride, she knew exactly what she was doing. Her eyes were fixed on me. I wasn't surprised when she stopped beside our table. "Hi, handsome," she purred. As she bent to pick something off the floor that may or may not have actually been there, Sean growled. Seriously? I fought the urge to laugh. What? We're waiting for our mate. And? And there is no reason to entertain every woman who throws herself at you. You act as if finding our mate is scheduled for next week. I don't like her. Why? She's trying too hard. I nearly rolled my eyes. My wolf could be surprisingly judgmental. The woman flashed me a smile. "So, would you like to spend the rest of the night with me?" I returned her smile politely. "Not tonight." Her expression briefly fell before she recovered. "Your loss." Then she turned and disappeared into the crowd. "That woman was gorgeous," John said. "Then why didn't you talk to her?" "Because she wasn't interested in me." "That's never stopped you before." He grinned. "Fair point." A moment later, his gaze moved across the room. "Speaking of opportunities..." I followed his line of sight. Three women sat laughing at the bar. "Oh no," I said. "Oh yes." "You've known them for three seconds." "Long enough." I shook my head. Ten minutes later, John and the women were taking shots together. Five minutes after that, they were gone. A mind-link brushed against my consciousness. Don't wait up. I wasn't planning to. His laughter echoed through the connection before disappearing. Some things never changed. I took another sip of beer and let my eyes roam the room. Suddenly, a familiar face caught my attention. Megan. She stood near the dance floor, waving. I smiled as she made her way over. Megan was the Gamma's daughter from the neighboring Carcross Pack. Our packs had been allies for generations, and I'd known her for years. At one point we'd even dated. It hadn't lasted long, but we'd parted on good terms. "No dramatic breakup?" she'd joked at the time. "Not unless you want one." We'd both laughed and gone our separate ways. Now she slid into the booth across from me. "It's been a while." "It has." I took a moment to look at her. She was as attractive as I remembered. "You look good." She smiled. "So do you." There was a hint of mischief in her expression that I immediately recognized. Life was clearly treating her well. We talked comfortably for several minutes, catching up on pack news and mutual acquaintances. Eventually, she leaned closer. "Aren't you tired of pretending we're just catching up?" I laughed. "Direct as always." "You never complained before." "No. I didn't." Her hand settled lightly on my arm. "Want to get out of here?" I considered it. There was no reason not to. I wasn't dating anyone. I wasn’t interested in anything serious. I believed Megan understood that; I had made my position clear more than once. "Sure, why not." Her smile widened. A valet brought the Range Rover around, and we headed out. As soon as we were on the road, Megan turned toward me. "We could go back to the pack house." Immediately Sean stirred. Absolutely not. I suppressed a smirk. "Not tonight," I said. "Why not?" "Because I'd rather avoid the audience." She laughed. "Fair enough." We drove in comfortable silence for several minutes before arriving at a lake just outside town. The water reflected the moonlight, creating a peaceful scene. I parked near the shoreline and reached into the back seat for a bottle of whiskey. "Now this is nice," Megan said. "Better than a crowded bar." "Much better." I poured a glass for each of us. For a while, we simply sat on the hood of the SUV, enjoying the quiet. Then Megan surprised me. "I'm actually looking for a new job." I glanced over. "A job?" She nodded. "Something different. A new challenge." "What's wrong with working for your Alpha?" "Nothing." She took a sip of whiskey. "I just want a change." "Fair enough." She looked at me hopefully. "Does the Elle Group have anything available?" I considered the question. The company was expanding rapidly, and we were recruiting constantly. "Probably." Her smile returned. "I thought so." "Send your résumé to HR tomorrow." She wrinkled her nose. "A résumé?" I laughed. "That's generally how hiring works." "Even for friends?" "Especially for friends." She rolled her eyes dramatically. "I was hoping being friends with the owner might have some advantages." "It does." "Oh?" “I'll personally ensure HR gets your application." She laughed. "That's not exactly the answer I wanted." "It is the answer you're getting." Megan shook her head but smiled. Some things never changed. And judging by the look she gave me, she wasn't quite done trying to convince me otherwise. Once Megan got her answer, the playful smile she'd been wearing all evening returned. She shifted closer, her hand resting lightly on my arm. "Still as stubborn as ever," she teased. I chuckled. "Some things don't change." Her hands slipped into my pants, and I felt myself respond instantly. I lowered my seat to give us more room. She moved in front of me, stroking me a few times. “It reacts to me the same way every time, eager,” she murmured. There was nothing tender or romantic between us, just a raw need we both wanted to satisfy. I reached for a condom from the glove compartment and tore it open. Flattening the seat, I positioned myself behind her and we lost ourselves in the moment, moving together until we both reached our peak. Afterward, I disposed of the condom and handed her some tissue to clean up. "So, what happens now?" "Nothing, we go back to our life as usual." Eventually, I started the engine and pulled back onto the road. The drive was peaceful, neither feeling the need to fill every moment with conversation. When we reached town, I stopped outside where she was staying. Before getting out, Megan turned towards me. "We'll talk tomorrow about the job?" "Send me your résumé." She rolled her eyes. "There you go again with the résumé." "Rules are rules." She laughed and opened the door. "Goodnight, Chris." "Goodnight, Megan." She stepped onto the sidewalk, then paused long enough to send me a playful wink before walking away. I watched her disappear into the building before pulling back onto the road. As I drove toward the packhouse, my thoughts shifted to Jamaica. Only a few more days remained before the opening of Colonial Oasis. For some reason I couldn't explain, the trip occupied more of my thoughts than it should have. Deep inside, Sean stirred restlessly. The wolf had been unusually alert whenever Jamaica came up. I frowned slightly. Sean was just acting strange these days. But for the first time in a long while, I found myself looking forward to the unknown.
