Chapter 10: Dangerous Attraction

1630 Words
Stephanie’s POV “I can practically hear the questions racing through your head.” I laughed. “Am I that obvious?” “Go ahead. What do you want to ask?” “I don’t know what to say or where to start.” “Whatever you’re thinking.” I studied him for a moment. “Okay.” He waited. “How exactly did I end up in a car with the CEO driving me home after dancing with me in front of the entire staff?” A slow smile spread across his face. “I don’t think it’s strange at all.” “No?” He shook his head. Then, without breaking eye contact, he said, “I’d call it fate.” And somehow, the way he looked at me made me wonder if it might just be fate. “I consider myself a straight to the point kind of guy. When I see something I want, I go after it. I don’t see the point in wasting time beating around the bush.” His gaze remained locked on mine. “And one thing we both know is that there’s an undeniable attraction between us. Every time I touch you, I see the way you react. It’s like electricity runs through your body from the slightest contact.” As he spoke, he shifted closer, slowly erasing the remaining distance between us. His hand settled gently on my thigh. As if proving his point, the warmth of his touch seeped through the fabric of my dress, sending a tremor through me. My breath caught when his fingers lightly traced downward before gliding back up along my leg. A shiver traveled through my entire body, impossible to suppress. We both knew what he was saying was true. Wanting to stop the effect he was having on me, I placed my hand over his. The moment my hand touched his, another wave of tingling warmth shot through me, traveling from my fingers up my arms and settling somewhere deep in my chest. His eyes darkened as he watched my reaction with hungry intensity. “Your scent is driving me crazy,” he murmured, moving closer with each word until it felt like he filled the entire space around me. My pulse quickened as he leaned in, his face stopping just inches from my neck. He inhaled deeply, closing his eyes for a moment before smiling. “You smell like vanilla and coconut on a warm summer morning,” he whispered, his voice low and husky. “It’s a combination I find impossible to resist.” A flutter of nervous excitement swept through me as I sat frozen beneath his gaze, painfully aware that resisting him was becoming more difficult with every passing second. He traced my neck with his tongue as if testing whether I tasted as good as he imagined. His lips followed, kissing along the sensitive skin until a moan slipped out before I could stop it. I’d never been this turned on by a simple neck kiss. There were no words for how incredible it felt. When he sucked the spot between my neck and shoulder, the moan that escaped was even louder, and I clenched my thighs together, desperate to contain the heat pooling between them. Slowly, he released my hands and ran his fingers down my thighs to the hem of my dress. “I can tell you want me,” he whispered, returning to the sensitive spot on my neck. The sensations he drew from just my neck were intoxicating. I was not able to focus on what he was saying. Slowly, he moved to my lips, brushing them with a gentle kiss that lingered until I parted for him. He didn’t rush. His lips moved against mine slowly, almost teasingly, giving me every opportunity to pull away. Instead, I leaned closer. His hand slid to the back of my neck, holding me gently as he deepened the kiss. The softness disappeared little by little, replaced by something warmer and far more demanding. I responded without thinking. My fingers curled into his shirt as his mouth moved over mine again. He pulled me closer, and the heat of his body against mine sent another rush of sensation through me. When he drew back slightly, I followed him before I could stop myself. A smile touched his lips. Before I could say anything, he kissed me again. This time, there was nothing hesitant about it. His mouth claimed mine with an urgency that made my thoughts scatter. I tightened my grip on his shirt as the kiss deepened, completely forgetting every sensible thought. For those few seconds, there was only Christopher. His lips on mine. His hands roaming my body. A soft gasp escaped me as he growled in response. The sound vibrated against my lips, and something about it sent another shiver through me. I was losing control. What was happening to me? I’d never wanted anyone this quickly. Not even Kyle after more than a year together. I was a relationship kind of girl, I had never been interested in one night stands. The intensity of our attraction left me confused and more than a little frightened. “Stop, I can’t,” I said. He instantly stopped. His mouth lingered for a moment before he finally pulled away. When I caught my breath, he gently moved me from his lap, where I’d ended up during our heated make-out session. He smoothed my dress back into place, his touch lingering. “Are you okay?” he asked. I remained silent for a moment. The truth was, I had no idea how to answer. “I don’t know,” I admitted quietly, shaking my head. “This is crazy.” The words tumbled out before I could stop them. “I don’t know what came over me. I don’t normally do things like this.” I let out a nervous laugh. “I just made out with my boss, in the back seat of a car.” A teasing smile tugged at the corner of his mouth, clearly enjoying my flustered confession. “Would you have preferred if we’d made out at the hotel instead?” he teased. I stared at him, half convinced he’d lost his mind. Maybe he had. The fact that he didn’t immediately see the problem made the situation feel even more absurd. His smile faded as he raised both hands in surrender. “Okay, okay. Relax. I was joking.” “I don’t think this is funny, Chris.” His expression softened, concern flickering in his eyes. “I know.” “No, I don’t think you do.” I folded my arms across my chest. “You’re the CEO. You’re the boss. Nobody can tell you what to do.” “You’re right. I didn’t think about how this could affect you differently than it affects me.” His admission only made me realize how frustrated I was. Because that was exactly the problem. He was the boss. Nothing about this situation was equal. If anyone found out, his position wouldn’t be questioned. Mine would. I was an intern. The newest employee. The easiest person to accuse of pursuing the boss for attention or advancement. The car fell silent as the reality of the situation settled between us. “Stef,” Chris said quietly, “I would never do anything that would put you or your job at risk.” I wanted to believe him. The problem was that life wasn’t always that simple. Before I could respond, he spoke again. “Can I see you tomorrow?” I looked away. The sensible answer was obvious. “I don’t think that’s a good idea right now.” A flicker of disappointment crossed his face. Before either of us could say anything else, a knock sounded against the privacy partition. Chris pressed a button, lowering the divider. “We’re here,” Cameron said from the driver’s seat. My familiar street appeared outside the window, bringing a surprising sense of relief. “Thanks, Cameron.” “No problem.” Chris turned back to me. “Can we talk about this?” I hesitated. The rational part of my brain was screaming at me to say no. The other part, the one that wanted him, was considerably less helpful. “It’s late,” I said carefully. “Can we talk another time?” For a moment, he simply studied me. Then he nodded. “Okay.” Relief washed over me. At least he wasn’t going to push. I reached for the door handle. “Goodnight, Chris.” “Goodnight, Stef.” The way he said my name made my stomach flutter. I quickly climbed out of the vehicle before I could overthink it. Thankfully, he didn’t have my phone number. And tomorrow was Sunday. The office would be closed. That meant I had at least one day to clear my head and figure out what on earth I was supposed to do about Christopher Clarke. As I walked toward the house, I could feel his eyes following me. I resisted the urge to look back. The second I stepped inside, I locked the door and headed straight for my room. Dropping onto my bed, I buried my face in a pillow and let out a long, exhausted sigh. What was supposed to be a simple staff party had somehow turned into one of the most overwhelming nights of my life. And the worst part? Despite all the reasons I should stay away from him, I couldn’t stop thinking about him. Or the way he looked at me as if I were the only person in the room. Sleep was going to be impossible tonight.
