LANCE epilogue I check the time, fixing my hair with unsteady hands. Zander and I have been husbands for the eternity that we were given, but just the thought of him still makes my heart flutter. I am wearing my best suit, checking if everything in order through my reflection in the full-length mirror. Zander always tells me I still look as handsome as the first time he saw me forty years ago. My phone rings. “Hiii Da!” Thea chirps. She’s now a university student, studying law. “How’s the most handsome father in the world?” “I’m doing great, as always,” I reply, suppressing a cough. “How’s uni?” I listen to her as she tells me about her day, thinking of the first time Zander and I saw her at the orphanage. How she waved her tiny hands at us and wrapped her fingers around our thumbs.
