I smile widely at Alex, rubbing our palms together to give him warmth. “A helicopter just arrived, Al. I told you, the doctor won’t let you die. They’re going to take the body to the hospital. Once I’m there, I’m going to scream for help. We’re going to be free.”
Alex smiles sadly, holding my hands. “Brother, this is the last time I can submerge your body into the tub. Your body can’t make it if I try one more time.”
“No!” I exclaim. “If I go on long enough breathing on my own inside the helicopter and the doctor notices, he’s gonna ask them to turn back. I need more time, Alex. Please. We’re so close.”
Alex shakes his head, tears flying around. “I want to. So bad. But I can’t let you die.”
