As Lexi walked home from school, she enjoyed the crisp afternoon air. Suddenly, a sleek black sports car slowed down beside her. Jake leaned over, his piercing blue eyes locking onto hers. "Need a ride?" he asked, his tone neutral. Lexi's heart skipped a beat. Why was he being so casual after their intense encounter in art class? "I'm good," she replied, trying to sound indifferent. Jake raised an eyebrow. "Suit yourself." With a dismissive nod, he accelerated, leaving Lexi feeling bewildered and slightly annoyed. She continued walking, lost in thought. What was Jake's game? Did he think he could just ignore the sparks flying between them? Twenty minutes later, Lexi turned onto her driveway, surrounded by lush greenery. The grandeur of her family's estate loomed before her. As she entered, the warm glow of the chandelier lit up the foyer. Her mother, Catherine, stood by the staircase, elegant in her designer gown. "Hey, sweetie! How was your day?" Catherine asked, air-kissing Lexi's cheek. Lexi shrugged, dropping her backpack onto the floor. "It was fine." Catherine's eyes narrowed. "Is everything okay? You seem a bit... distracted." Lexi forced a smile. "Just school stuff, Mom." Her mother's gaze lingered, but she didn't press further. "Dinner will be ready soon. Your father is joining us tonight." Lexi's heart sank. Her father's rare appearances always brought tension. "Okay, I'll go wash up," Lexi said, heading upstairs. As she climbed the stairs, Lexi couldn't shake off the feeling that Jake's nonchalant attitude was just a facade. Lexi headed upstairs to wash up, her mind still replaying the encounter with Jake. She pushed aside the thoughts, focusing on the impending dinner with her dad.In the bathroom, Lexi splashed water on her face, refreshing herself. She took a deep breath, preparing for the awversation that often accompanied her father's rare appearances. Downstairs, the dining room table was set with fine china and crystal glasses. Lexi's mother, Catherine, smiled warmly as Lexi took her seat. Cole Parker, Lexi's father, entered the room, commanding attention. His presence was imposing, his eyes piercing. "Lexi, how's school?" Cole asked, his tone firm but polite. "It's going well, Dad," Lexi replied, keeping her answers brief. The conversation revolved around business, politics, and social events. Lexi's mother expertly navigated the topics, while Lexi remained quiet, observing. As dinner concluded, Cole pushed his chair back. "I have a meeting soon. Lexi, remember the charity gala this weekend. You'll accompany me." Lexi nodded, feeling trapped. "Yes, Dad." Cole stood, his eyes scanning the room. "Catherine, ensure Lexi understands the importance of this event." Catherine smiled, her eyes locking onto Lexi's. "Of course, Cole." With a final glance, Cole exited the room, leaving an uncomfortable silence. Catherine broke the silence. "Lexi, darling, let's get you ready for the gala. We'll choose a beautiful gown tomorrow." Lexi forced a smile, feeling suffocated by her family's expectations. As the evening drew to a close, Lexi retreated to her room, her thoughts drifting back to Jake. Lexi flopped onto her bed, grabbing her phone. She needed a distraction from her thoughts. She dialed Rachel's number, and her friend answered on the first ring. "Hey, girl! What's up?" Rachel asked, her voice bubbly. "Just got out of dinner with my dad," Lexi replied, rolling her eyes. "Ugh, how was it?" Rachel sympathized. "The usual. All about appearances and expectations." Rachel snorted. "You'll survive. Want to study together later?" Lexi smiled. "Definitely. I need a break from this drama." "Pick you up at 7 pm tomorrow?" Rachel asked. "Sounds perfect." As they chatted, Lexi's tension eased. Rachel always knew how to lift her spirits. After the call, Lexi settled into her favorite spot on the couch, laptop open. She began reviewing her notes, focusing on the upcoming exams. As she studied, her mind occasionally wandered to Jake. Their encounter still puzzled her. At 10 pm, Lexi closed her laptop, yawning. Tomorrow would bring new challenges, but with Rachel by her side, she felt more prepared. Lexi drifted off to sleep, her thoughts a jumbled mix of Jake, her family, and the looming charity hala. *** Lexi's alarm clock buzzed, but before she could reach for it, her mother's gentle voice filled the room. "Good morning, sweetie! Rise and shine." Lexi opened her eyes to find her mother, Catherine, standing beside her bed, elegantly dressed in a cream-colored Chanel suit. "Morning, Mom," Lexi replied, stretching. Her room, a serene oasis, reflected her personal style: Soft gray walls adorned with framed artwork and inspirational quotes Plush white carpeting underfoot A queen-sized bed with a tufted headboard and crisp linens A sleek, silver laptop on her desk, surrounded by textbooks and notes Floor-to-ceiling windows with sheer curtains, bathing the room in natural light Catherine handed Lexi a steaming cup of coffee. "Get dressed, darling. We don't want to be late." Lexi swung her legs over the side of the bed, revealing her sleepwear – a cozy pair of pink Victoria's Secret pajamas. She quickly got dressed in: A fitted white blouse with delicate lace trim A flowy black skirt, falling just above her knees Black ballet flats, polished to perfection Simple silver jewelry – a delicate necklace and stud earrings Downstairs, Catherine waited by the front door, holding Lexi's backpack. "Let's go, sweetie," she said, smiling. They walked out to the driveway, where Catherine's luxurious: Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan awaited, its sleek design gleaming in the morning sunlight Pearl-white exterior, complemented by crisp black leather interior Heated seats and advanced infotainment system As they drove to school, Lexi gazed out the window, lost in thought. At school, Catherine pulled up to the entrance. "Have a great day, Lexi. Don't forget about the gala preparations tonight." Lexi nodded, collecting her backpack. "Love you, Mom." "Love you too, darling." With a wave, Lexi stepped out of the car and into the bustling school courtyard. As Lexi stepped out of her mother's car, the warm sunlight and lively chatter of the school courtyard enveloped her. Scanning the crowd, Lexi's eyes landed on Rachel, standing by the fountain, sipping a coffee. Rachel's bright smile and energetic wave drew Lexi in. "Hey, girl! Looking fabulous, as always." Lexi laughed, joining Rachel by the fountain. "Thanks, Rach. You're not so bad yourself." Rachel's outfit popped with color: A vibrant yellow sundress, cinched at the waist Pair of statement sunglasses, perched on her forehead Sandals, showcasing her brightly painted toenails The two friends exchanged morning pleasantries, catching up on each other's weekends. "Ready to tackle tests?" Lexi asked, shouldering her backpack. "Born ready," Rachel replied, grinning. "We're going to ace those tests." As they chatted, Lexi's eyes instinctively scanned the courtyard, searching for a familiar figure – Jake. Rachel noticed Lexi's distraction. "Looking for someone?" Lexi quickly shook her head. "No, just... lost in thought." Rachel raised an eyebrow but didn't press further. The school bell rang, signaling the start of classes. "Time to get our learn on," Rachel said, linking arms with Lexi. Together, they merged into the stream of students flowing towards their lockers. The tests flew by in a blur, Lexi's well-prepared mind tackling each question with ease. As she walked out of the exam room, Rachel grinned. "Piece of cake, right?" Lexi smiled. "Definitely." They headed to the cafeteria, the aroma of fresh food and lively chatter welcoming them. Lexi and Rachel settled at their favorite table by the window, enjoying chicken wraps and salads. Just as they were engrossed in conversation, a commotion rippled through the cafeteria. Heads turned, eyes locked onto the entrance. A new student, breathtakingly handsome, walked in: Tall, around 6'2", with broad shoulders and chiseled features Piercing emerald green eyes, sparkling with warmth Raven-black hair, perfectly messy and styled Strong jawline, accentuated by a subtle scruff Full lips, curled into a disarming smile The cafeteria fell under his spell. Girls giggled, whispering to each other. Guys nodded in admiration. But Lexi remained unmoved. Something about his charisma felt calculated. His smile seemed too perfect. His eyes, though captivating, lacked depth. Rachel, however, was smitten. "Wow, who's that?" Lexi shrugged. "No idea." The new boy scanned the room, his gaze locking onto Lexi. For a fleeting moment, their eyes met. Lexi felt a shiver, but not from attraction. More like a warning. As he made his way through the crowd, Lexi sensed trouble. "Do you think he's a transfer student?" Rachel asked. Lexi's instincts whispered: "Be cautious." The handsome stranger approached their table. "Mind if I join you?" he asked, his voice low and smooth. Lexi hesitated. Rachel, however, eagerly welcomed him. The new boy smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Mind if I join you?" he repeated. Rachel, still starstruck, nodded enthusiastically. Lexi shrugged, her expression neutral. He took a seat, his presence commanding attention. "I'm... um..." Rachel stuttered, her eyes fixed on his face. The boy chuckled. "Don't worry, I'll start. I'm Ethan." Rachel's cheeks flushed. "I'm... Rachel." Ethan's gaze shifted to Lexi, his eyes sparkling with interest. "And you are...?" he asked, his voice low and inviting. Lexi hesitated, sensing Ethan's attention was more than casual. "I'm Lexi," she replied, her tone measured. Ethan's smile widened. "Nice to meet you, Lexi." As they chatted, Lexi noticed Ethan's focus remained on her, despite Rachel's obvious infatuation. Rachel, still mesmerized, struggled to contribute to the conversation. Ethan asked Lexi about her interests, listening attentively to her responses. Lexi found herself opening up, despite initial reservations. As they talked, Lexi sensed Ethan's intensity, like he was trying to uncover a hidden truth. Rachel, oblivious to the undercurrents, giggled at Ethan's jokes. The cafeteria noise faded into the background as Lexi's awareness narrowed to Ethan's piercing green eyes. Suddenly, Ethan stood. "I should get going. Nice meeting you both." Rachel looked crestfallen. Lexi felt a mix of relief and curiosity. As Ethan walked away, Rachel turned to Lexi. "Oh my god, he's amazing!" Rachel squealed. Lexi raised an eyebrow. "You think?" Rachel nodded vigorously. "I'm totally crushing on him." Lexi just stood up to drop her plates without replying her.
