The Fire between us

Ethan stood in the doorway, his face void of emotion, yet his entire presence was charged with something raw and dangerous. Lena had expected anger. She had expected resentment. But what she hadn’t prepared for was the way his dark eyes held her in place, making her stomach tighten with a mix of fear and something she couldn’t name. Jared sat behind his desk, watching the tense exchange with obvious amusement. "Well, this is awkward," he muttered, but his smirk didn’t quite reach his eyes. Ethan didn’t acknowledge him. His attention was locked onto Lena as if she were the only person in the room. His silence was worse than yelling, worse than anything she had imagined. She had faced boardrooms filled with ruthless businessmen, had stood beside her father as he crushed competitors without flinching, but nothing compared to standing in front of Ethan Cole after everything that had happened. She forced herself to hold his gaze. "I need to talk to you." Ethan finally moved, stepping further into the room and shutting the door behind him with a quiet, deliberate click. The sound sent an unexplainable shiver down her spine. "Talk?" His voice was quiet, but it was the kind of quiet that was far more dangerous than shouting. "You expect me to listen to you after what you did?" Lena’s throat tightened. "I know who framed you," she said, pushing through the storm raging inside her. That got his attention. Jared let out a low whistle. "Now we’re getting somewhere." Ethan still didn’t look away from her. His face remained unreadable, but there was something sharper in his eyes now—something dark, something furious. "Go on," he said, his voice still dangerously calm. She took a deep breath. "It was Victor Hayes." A muscle in Ethan’s jaw ticked. He exhaled slowly, shaking his head as if he had already known the answer but needed to hear it aloud. "Figures," he muttered, his voice laced with bitterness. Lena pressed forward. "He’s been after my father’s partnership for months, but you were in the way. He knew that as long as you were in charge of cybersecurity, you wouldn’t let him get his hands on the company’s data. The moment you were fired, the deal went through." Ethan’s expression darkened. "So it wasn’t just about humiliating me. It was a power play." "Exactly." Jared let out a short laugh, shaking his head. "That slimy bastard. He played you like a damn chess piece." Ethan ran a hand over his face, his body visibly tensed with frustration. "And Damian?" His voice was edged with something deeper when he looked at her again. "Was he in on it?" Lena hesitated, the weight of her father’s influence pressing down on her. That hesitation was enough. Ethan’s laugh was bitter this time. "Of course he was." "No," she said quickly. "I don’t think he knew—at least not at first. But now? Now, I think he suspects something." Ethan’s eyes narrowed. "And what about you?" Lena swallowed hard. "What about me?" "You knew I was innocent, Lena," Ethan said, stepping closer, his voice low and accusing. "And you said nothing. You let them throw me to the wolves." The guilt was unbearable, but she refused to back down. "I was scared, Ethan. You don’t understand what it’s like to be his daughter. To be trapped in his world." Ethan scoffed. "No, I don’t. Because unlike you, I had to fight for everything I have. And when someone tried to take it from me, I had no one to protect me." Lena flinched. His words were like knives, cutting deep. But she deserved them. "I’m here now," she said, voice softer. "I want to fix this." Ethan stared at her for a long time, his face unreadable. "You can’t fix what’s already broken." The room was thick with tension. Jared cleared his throat, breaking the silence. "Well, this is getting depressing. How about we focus on ruining Victor instead?" Ethan dragged his gaze away from Lena and nodded. "Right. If Victor set me up, I want proof. I want to destroy him." Jared smirked. "Now you’re speaking my language." Lena hesitated before speaking again. "And my father?" Ethan’s expression turned ice cold. "He’s next." The words sent a chill through her, but what scared her the most was the part of her that didn’t disagree. She had already betrayed Ethan once. Now, she was about to betray her father too. Ethan took another step forward, his towering presence making her breath hitch. "Why are you really here, Lena?" She forced herself to keep her composure. "I told you. I want to help." "Help?" Ethan let out a humorless laugh. "You think you can just walk in here and suddenly switch sides?" Lena’s heart pounded. "I don’t expect you to trust me. But I know things you don’t. Things that could take Victor down." Ethan stared at her for a long moment before speaking. "If you’re lying to me—" "I’m not," she interrupted. Another silence stretched between them, heavy with unspoken tension. Jared leaned back, smirking. "Well, this is fun. But I have work to do. Ethan, if you’re done glaring at her, maybe we should start digging up dirt on Victor." Ethan exhaled sharply before nodding. "Fine." He glanced at Lena one last time. "Stay out of my way." Lena didn’t move as he walked past her. She knew that despite everything, despite the anger and betrayal, the fire between them hadn’t been extinguished. And that terrified her more than anything. Ethan walked past her, his body tense with frustration, but Lena wasn’t done. She reached out, grabbing his wrist, forcing him to stop. His muscles tensed under her touch, and when he turned, his eyes burned with something raw—anger, desire, or both. "Let go," he said, his voice dangerously low. "Not until you listen," she whispered, stepping closer. The air between them grew thick, charged with something undeniable. "I made a mistake, Ethan. But I’m here now. I want to make this right." Ethan exhaled sharply, his jaw clenched. "And what happens when your father finds out you’re helping me?" Lena swallowed. "I’ll handle him." A bitter smirk tugged at his lips. "You really think you can?" Her heart pounded, but she nodded. "Yes." Ethan’s gaze dropped to her lips for a split second, and the tension exploded. In one swift move, he pulled her against him, his grip firm, his breath warm against her skin. "You’re playing a dangerous game, Lena," he murmured. She shivered but didn’t pull away. "So are you." For a moment, they hovered on the edge of something reckless, something forbidden. But then Ethan stepped back, eyes dark. "Get me proof," he said coldly. "Then we’ll talk."
