The Awakening of a rival

1001 Words
Ethan Cole sat in his darkened apartment alone, the echo of Lena’s footsteps still haunting him. She had left hours ago, but the scent of her perfume still lingered in the air, a cruel reminder of the mistake he had just made. He ran a hand through his disheveled hair, his jaw tightening. He should have pushed her away the moment she knocked on his door. He should have demanded answers, should have hated her for staying silent when he needed her the most. But instead, he had touched her, kissed her, and let his rage turn into something else—something darker, more desperate. Now, she was gone. And he was left with absolutely nothing but the weight of his own downfall. His phone buzzed, snapping him from his thoughts. He glanced at the screen. Jared Scott. Ethan exhaled sharply before answering. “You don’t call unless there’s a problem,” Ethan muttered. “Yeah, well,” Jared’s voice was laced with amusement. “Your entire career just went up in flames, and you banged the CEO’s daughter. I’d say that qualifies as a problem.” Ethan scowled. “Shut up, Jared.” Jared chuckled. “Relax, man. I’m not here to judge you or anyone. But I am here to talk business.” Ethan leaned forward, his muscles tense. “What do you have for me?” Jared’s voice turned serious. “I ran a deep dive on the security footage that got you fired. That video? It’s fake.” Ethan’s entire body went still. “What?” “You heard me,” Jared said. “Whoever set you up did a damn good job, but they underestimated me. The timestamps were altered. The audio? Doctored. And the most interesting part? The footage was uploaded into the company’s security system just hours before it was leaked to the press.” Ethan’s hands curled into fists. Someone had planned this. Someone had wanted him out. And they had gone through great lengths to make sure it happened. “Who?” Ethan’s voice was sharp, dangerous. “Who did this?” Jared hesitated. “I don’t have a name yet. But I have a lead.” Ethan’s pulse pounded. He had spent the last twenty-four hours drowning in anger and regret. But now? Now, he had purpose. And he was going to burn the world down to get his revenge. A Woman Caught Between Two Men Meanwhile, across town, Lena Knight sat in her father’s office, her hands gripping the arms of the chair as Damian paced in front of her. “I want you to tell me the truth,” Damian said, his voice low and controlled. “Did Ethan Cole touch you?” Lena’s stomach twisted. She could still feel Ethan—his hands on her body, the way his lips had claimed hers. But what hurt the most was the look in his eyes when she had stayed silent during his firing. Her silence had destroyed him. And she had no idea how to fix it. “Lena,” Damian’s voice sharpened. “Answer me.” She swallowed. “No.” Damian narrowed his eyes. “No?” “No,” she repeated, her voice stronger. “Ethan didn’t do what they’re accusing him of.” Damian exhaled through his nose, his expression unreadable. “Then someone framed him.” Lena’s heart skipped a beat. For the first time, doubt flickered across her father’s face. “I don’t know who did it,” she said carefully, watching his reaction. Damian was a powerful man, a ruthless businessman. But was he capable of framing Ethan? Or was he just another pawn in someone else’s game? Before she could ask, the office door swung open. Victor Hayes walked in, a satisfied smirk on his face. “Damian,” Victor greeted. “I thought I’d drop by with an update.” Lena’s stomach turned. She didn’t trust Victor. Never had. She watched as her father’s expression hardened. “What update?” Victor’s smirk widened. “Our new deal with Horizon Technologies just went through. With Ethan out of the picture, there’s nothing stopping us from moving forward.” Lena’s blood ran cold. Ethan’s firing wasn’t just about the scandal. It was business. And Victor had been waiting for the right moment to strike. Damian nodded, but Lena saw the flicker of realization in his eyes. He knew. And for the first time in her life, Lena felt something dangerous bloom inside her. She had just betrayed Ethan. And now, she was about to betray her father too. An Unlikely Offer Later that night, Lena made a decision. She walked into Jared Scott’s underground workspace, where computer screens flickered with data. Jared raised an eyebrow when he saw her. “Well, well. If it isn’t the billionaire princess.” Lena ignored his sarcasm. “I need to see Ethan.” Jared leaned back in his chair. “What makes you think he wants to see you?” Lena hesitated, then said, “Because I know who set him up.” The amusement in Jared’s eyes faded. “I want to help,” she said, voice firm. “And I don’t care what it costs me.” Jared studied her, then let out a slow whistle. “Damn. Ethan’s not gonna like this.” But he still picked up his phone. A few moments later, he looked at her and smirked. “You’re in luck, sweetheart. He’s on his way.” Lena exhaled, nerves crawling up her spine. She wasn’t sure what would happen when Ethan walked through that door. All she knew was that the moment she saw him again, everything would change. Minutes later, the door swung open. Ethan walked in, his cold, furious gaze locking onto hers. Lena’s breath hitched. She had come to fix things. But the look in Ethan’s eyes told her one thing— He wasn’t going to forgive her. He was going to make her pay.
